I have the river cottage family cookbook, too and I made the brownies the other day and I gave them a bit longer than stated in the book, too. I thought they were a bit underdone, and, though I know brownies are meant to be a bit underdone, I thought it was a bit much.

I must say I have the Leith's baking bible which is very expensive, I know - £35!!! - but every single recipe I have tried has come out perfectly.

I did a beef in beer recipe, followed it exactly and it tasted really bitter and horrible. Was totally gutted as the beef was lovely and I had to throw it all in the bin!
  • Delia's beef in Guinness with pickled walnuts is very good - it's in the Christmas cookbook and I've made it a couple of times and it hasn't failed me (that's one of the few tv tie-in books that I do like lol). Only problem with it is that it's hard to get hold of the walnuts during most of the year, and IIRC it needed an odd cut of meat that was difficult to find.
  • I made this lemon pudding which sounded yummy, was one of those that made its own sauce whilst it cooked.

I have never tasted anything so disgusting. My 8yo son, bless him, struggled through half a bowl before saying 'I'm really sorry mummy but I really don't like this. May I leave the rest?'

Even my husband who normally eats anything without even tasting it (so it seems!) couldn't manage any more than a couple of spoonfuls.

I tried to make Nigellas toffee apples for a bonfire party. The toffee just didn't set or even thicken and ran off the apples and sat in a big puddle on my worktop! I followed the recipe to the letter and used a thermometer but no such luck. I left some in the pan just to see if time would help and 24 hours later it was still like single cream
  • I made Nigella's "ham in coke" and it was lovely......like she suggested I saved the stock to make her black bean soup. This on the other hand was vile.....there's so much coriander in it it's completely unpalatable and the coke/black beans give it an unappetising purple colour.

    Never again.
Life in this world is, as it were, a sojourn in a cave. What can we know of reality? For all we can see of the true nature of existence is, shall we say, no more than bewildering and amusing shadows cast upon the inner wall of the cave by the unseen blinding light of absolute truth, from which we may or may not deduce some glimmer of veracity, and we as troglodyte seekers of wisdom can only lift our voices to the unseen and say humbly "Go on, do deformed rabbit again.....it's my favourite". © Terry Pratchett in "Small Gods"

Jamie Oliver's sesame seed caramel brittle - I couldn't even get the sugar to turn in the least bit golden. With hindsight, I think his proportions of water to sugar must've been out but I've never been bothered to go back and try again.

Oh, and on Monday I made a stir fry to use up some bits of veg and some tofu. I added some Italian pickled aubergine which was lovely on it's own, but the whole meal was disgusting.

I'm usually pretty good but must've been having an off day. OH is a complete whizz at making meals up and his concoctions never fail to delight, the downside being that anything completely awesome can't be repeated as he can't ever remember what he put into it

    Mortgage-free Glee!
Years ago, before we were married, DH collected a set of cookery cards. Soon after we were wed we tried "Baked beans flamenco". From memory it consisted of a couple of tins of beans with eggs broken into them and then baked in the oven. Can't remember if there were other ingredients - they were the main ones! Yuk, Yuk, Yuk! We both still shudder at the memory!

  • Tofu, tofu, tofu.
there is no point in trying it again - it cannot ever be edible surely.
