Project Mortgage Neutral Begins

Stepping out of my comfort zone and putting some trust in others, I have messaged a roofer and plasterer who have been recommended by a friend to get a quote for some work to be done. I can't stay in this land of limbo and deserve to live in a nice house that is how I want it!

It is only getting return messages but I have heard back from both people I got in touch. The plasterer is coming out to see me tomorrow and hoping to hear back from the roofer to see his availability in the next few days. Let's see how things progress from that!

Sending you lots of luck for progress. Getting quotes seems to be very hard work indeed. My mortgage free diary: https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/6498069/whoops-here-comes-the-cheese

The plasterer turned up on time. He knows I want to get all my ceilings doen at some point but for now has just measured up the rooms I want doing first. Hopefully I will hear from him in the next couple of days although I have no idea how much things cost to know whether it will be good or not. I am happy to wait to start in the new year which seems feasible for him. Watch this space...

I have no idea if £1400 is good or bad to put plasterboard up and plaster the ceilings in 3 rooms but that is what he has come back with.

I have gained a bit of confidence after having a tradesman reply and come out to see me so today I have got in touch with another plasterer. He has some recent activity on facebook (not that it should mean anything) and a lot of photos doing exactly the work I want done. Hopefully I will hear back in a couple of days and be able to sort out another quote so I can gauge if the first one was ok or not.

I find it so stressful trying to organise trades. Especially when I don't have a recommendation.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
I have just updated my finances before I get paid in a few days time. By the Nov 1st I will have an extra £1k in my current account due to a backdated payrise and some extra allowances at work. The MSE park of me is really conflicted with what to do with the money...Part of me thinks I should save it all as it will help towards decorating, part of me wants to buy whatever I need that I have been putting off and save the rest and part of me wants to OP some of it too, even though it makes more sense to save rather than OP at the moment based on interest rates.I am aware I am lucky to have this conundrum but I honestly haven't got a clue what to do!MFW 2025 No. 7 £1130/£1200

Erm...wow.Project mortgage neutral is so nearly here. I have just checked all my accounts and updated my spreadsheets for the beginning of the month, I am currently £2924.64 away from having enough money across all my accounts to clear my mortgage. I had originally to be mortgage free by now but after going it alone I am more than happy with this. Some rough calcuations suggest that by the end of the year I might be about £600 away! They are very conservative amounts and are based on my S&S ISA staying exactly the same, with elections and everything going on in the world I can't rely on that figure. It also doesn't include my regular saver account which will mature at the end of the year and has more than this in it!!!!I also go into this month with £1034.30 extra at my disposal from backdated pay and some extra benefits. I made a list the other day of things I would like to buy so might start working through that but I think I am going to save some of this too.I am waiting for a couple of trades to let me know if they can give me some quotes for the work I want doing. I will follow those up today, if they don't get back in touch they won't be getting my business and I will look elsewhere. Work on the house will obviously eat into my savings pot and may affect the mortgage neutral plan but once I hit it my aim is to stay at that level. So my savings minght drop but so will my mortgage if that makes sense.I have already started thinking of a new diary title as once I hit mortgage neutral this one won't make sense anymore.Away from money news, I have been suffering with a bit of stress recently. I have a long weekend holiday this weekend so have deliberately left everything to do with work there to ensure I am not tempted to do anything. I am going to enjoy my time and hopefully get into the garden. Today I am meeting my family for lunch and am really looking forward to it. It is a couple of hours drive away so I am leaving with loads of extra time and am going to stop at a garden centre on the way for a look around as they have a sale.MFW 2025 No. 7 £1130/£1200

Great news on mortgage neutrality, well done!
Since you've excluded your regular saver I'd be tempted to say you are already there 🙂
I totally understand the need to avoid the feeling of going backwards, the idea of paying for home improvements from savings as the mortgage continues to reduce, always keeping ahead of mortgage neutrality makes sense to me 👍1
