Ripped off on an MOT?

You may find that you have a "modern" car which is much "better" than in The Olden Days, and has a massively expensive computer module to switch the fog light on (I kid you not, they have made things "better" by replacing a piece of wire that can't go wrong unless you cut it, with some shoddy electronics that fail)
If that is the case, then the moneysaving solution is to get someone to fit a switch with warning lamp and run a wire to the light.I want to go back to The Olden Days, when every single thing that I can think of was better.....
(except air quality and Medical Science)

These scams with lights happen frequently.....http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=1042854
No matter how much you check before you take it in.
Yep, that's one five year old example right there, and it's not a scam, it's just a dealer (that should never be doing MOTs in the first place if customers had any sense) providing a quote for the only solution they're probably authorised to offer under the terms of their franchise - new, OEM parts.
If people would do a bit of regular checking and maintenance, their cars wouldn't be in a state where they fail the MOT on easily avoided (and illegal, let's not forget) items like duff lights, bald tyres, and dodgy wipers.0 -
Take the car to Halfords and get the light bulbs replaced (cheaper), they will show you which are the fog lights, how they turn on and how to check. Then when it fails you can report the tester if he is being deceitful
Next time, if you do not know anyone in the trade, get an MOT at a city council test centre https://www.moneysavingexpert.com/travel/cheap-mot0 -
You didn't check basic things before MOT..
Worry about being ripped off at garages because you are a woman..
They saw you coming.0 -
No, nothing sounds odd - Bulbs blow, contacts can dry/corrode and even wiring can deteriorate.0

id be happy if my mots only failed on a couple of bulbs
Last year garage failed me on a headlight bulb and immediately passed it afterwards. They didn't even mention it and only found out when I got home and noticed the refusal sheet stapled to pass cert.
Funny as I checked all bulbs beforehand.0 -

Yes. It's under the heading 'PRS' in the mot system. Minor repairs like bulbs can be done during the test.
Maybe they changed the bulb free.
Or if their pass rate was too high sometimes stations put PRSs through to keep it down.0
