Can an iPhone be unlocked?

My mum has got a new phone and has offered me her old iPhone 4. She bought it a couple of years ago, on contract with O2 through the car phone warehouse. I can't use O2 as there's very poor reception where I live so I need to get it unlocked. We just keep getting pushed from one to the other with O2, carphone warehouse and apple, all saying it's the others responsibility.

Could anyone advise me on what to do? It's beginning to seem impossible.

When I changed my iPhone 4 O2 unlocked it. There used to be a link on their website and a form to fill in. As long as you are out of contract they can do it.

The only difference was I bought mine direct from O2 so no third party was involved.

o2's responsibility , they are the "owning" network its locked to


CPW iphones are supplied unlocked but lock to the first network sim card that's put in the phone

There are eBay unlockers who can unlock the official way.

It will cost around £10-£15.

The usual stuff. Making phone calls and texts, taking photos, playing music, using it as a sat nav occasionally.

You need to call o2 to get it unlocked. You pay a small fee (usually less than £10) and it will take a week or so

As they aren't the account holder that would be a wasted call...

Yes it can be, you have to find it online mostly websites have some chargers to give unlock code for your iPhone.

Well they could ask the relevant account holder (their mum) to contact O2 and get the unlock.
