I'm not even with BT any more! When are these numbskulls going to realise they are one of the most well known scams going and everyone they attempt to call already knows it!

Unfortunately that can't be true :( They must still be catching enuf people to keep a call centre going. Not everyone is an MSE reader:)

While most of OP post is hilarious, I would like to point out your very risky assumption using Norton makes you protected. It's not true.

And this is only latest big problem. If you need protection - find yourself proper antivirus.

Had a call on my mobile three days ago from an 0800 number ...
It is important to remember that when you receive a call and the caller display shows a non-geographic number starting 03, 08 or 09, that what you are seeing is the "presentation number" programmed by the caller. Normally, the caller display unit would show the landline or mobile number that the call really originated from. When you receive a call from a business or from a scammer, the caller overrides this and the caller display unit presents some other number.

This feature does have a genuine use. When a genuine business calls, the number they show is for their inbound callcentre. When a scammer calls, the displayed number may be just random junk or it may show the number of a legitimate business, such as a bank or government department. Never trust the displayed number as being proof the caller is really from that organisation.

Especially when the caller appears to be your own phone or 999.
