Warn vulnerable relatives

...the Asian 'John Smiths' are back.

I have just had a call supposedly from BT , saying the usual (ie they have signals saying my internet is at risk on the device I'm using.)

Goodness, they are thick. It took ages for 'John' to realise that I was winding him up.

He assured me that my provider is BT (It's Sky) and that I have no internet protection (Norton installed just last week).

I assured him that my equipment is protected by antivirus software and that my son is IT qualified and would sort my machine should there be a problem, which there isn't.

But he persisted, asking me to sit in front of my device, upon whose screen he would show me my licence number. I told him that it was, in fact underneath, but to go ahead and see if his information matched mine.

He still didn't give up, asking if I could see a CTRL key. I replied that he meant control, upon which he agreed and asked if I saw a windows key right next to it...er 'no' (it's next but one).

He then asked if I had a Windows device or Mac , so getting bored I told him he should know that and if he was John Smith, then I'm Donald Duck.

He stayed polite and said Good afternoon, ma'am.'

I wonder how many wind ups, today, will make him lose his veneer, but, sadly, some poor soul will be taken in.

Had a call on my mobile three days ago from an 0800 number with a very polite Indian sounding man.
Asked if I was Mr Ariba and said he was with Virgin and gave me the bit about the call may be recorded for training purposes and asked for my Virgin password so that he could verify who I was. (i do have a Virgin landline)

I gave him the two word version of the advice Noah gave his sons when the Ark grounded. " Go forth and my multiply"
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

I haven't had the pleasure of hearing from them for years, but thought vulnerable people needed alerting as being from BT may reassure them into accepting the 'help'.

When I last heard they were still from Microsoft.

What amused me was the constant advise that just my laptop was sending out signals that it was insecure, with no mention of the other pcs in the house. He was such a kind gentleman, offering to fix my problems free of charge.:rotfl:

Does no-one remember the time when they picked the wrong "victim" - a BBC tech journalist who wound them up? When called out the cold caller turned on their victim and berated them for wasting their time! Bl**dy cheek :D

It was broadcast on R4 for all to hear :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

I have had two of these calls in the past month.
Kept them on the phone for as long as possible playing the dummy.
Apparently my computer was unsecured and sending out error message, wanted me to login to something called netviewer I think.
Eventually I got bored and offered them my opinion of what they where doing, got called a mother something or other.
    Nice.
  • I love the bit about my windows, and I normally respond in deaf old man tone. My Windows need ckeaning, can you climb ladder and do them.

They hang up, but in the five minutes, they don't con somebody else!

Rarely answer the phone during the day now ,because of all the junk callers but had to answer a few weeks ago as I was expecting a call from the garage.
Very pleasant gentleman, "Brian from Talktalk" was very insistent that my computer was infected and sending out viruses to lots of other computers on the network! He went thru the usual spiel, wanted me to open Event Viewer etc etc.
I managed to waste nearly 10 minutes of his time by firstly saying that my PC was off, then pretending that it was crashing/restarting every time I tried to open Event viewer -finally I told him that a series of porno pop ups were coming up in my browser ! At this point my tone of voice must have given him a clue ! He muttered something then hung up:rotfl:

I like the footage on YouTube, where the 'victim' takes a toilet break, even pouring a jug of water into the pan for effect.

"BT" phoned me up today. Asked me if I could turn on my computer please. I sat in silence before coming back with "sir, my PC has told me he doesn't do sexual relations with anyone, even if they tell me they are from BT".
I don't think he got it, but he did hang up.

I'm not even with BT any more! When are these numbskulls going to realise they are one of the most well known scams going and everyone they attempt to call already knows it!
