I did try to rectify it in April when I spoke to the holiday company. It's only because someone said to me today to try going to the airline direct

In the future, try EVERYTHING as soon as possible. I agree with your friend, it's amazing what grovelling can achieve as if you are polite, accept your error (rather than trying to put the blame on technology/other people/the weather), people actually do feel sorry for you and will try to help, however, you have to show a real commitment to trying to sort it out asap, not wait until months later by which time, you are expected to have accepted the situation.
