My 11 year old got his first mobile yesterday and has been texting a friend today - his friend has an 074529 number and so we've been charged for those texts! Luckily we've put a £2.50 safety buffer on or I shudder to think what sort of bill we'd have racked up!

Tesco mobile have asked me to call their support team tomorrow but led me to believe that the number (if proved to be a UK number) could be added as an exception. We'll see. Very annoying, and it's really upset my son.

    please post their response here.

also, demand that the £2.50 charge is refunded to you.
  • Phoned Tesco Mobile. They are insistent that 07452 numbers are Isle of Man numbers and therefore chargeable. When I pointed out that when followed by 7 - 9 these are allocated in the UK, they said they would raise a network number review. I should get to know the outcome within 3-5 days and will post on here. In the meantime they have refunded the charges already made.
Incidentally, turns out my son's friend's sim is ID too!

My friend is going to phone them later, have emailed her copy of your post here.

    ...just heard from friend...

she spent 20 mins talking to tesco mobile and explained issue. Was told that charges incurred so far would be refunded / re-credited to account & that issue would be passed up / on.

Told that she would receive response by text sometime this week, so wait & see I guess.

    Will post update here.

Incidentally, for those wondering, there are a number of places that can confirm who the rangeholder is. They include:
    http://www.ofcom.org.uk/static/numbering/
    http://checkit.uboss.com/Calling/UkPhoneNumberRangeHolders/
    https://www.telecom-tariffs.co.uk/codelook.htm
  • My friend contacted tesco mobile again today, as they had not responded. They again insisted that i must live in the isle of man (i do not) and that all other providers would be charging international rates to phone me (they don't, only tesco mobile).

They said they had had no one else bring this up as an issue (hello hjenx74...)

Friend mentioned ofcom, tesco mobile said they would take another look at it and refund any further costs invoked by her.

Will wait to see if they respond this time.

It takes mere minutes to confirm that 07452 9 is not the Isle of Man.

Ofcom needs to be aware of what's going on. Have you reported it yet?

Not yet, think it is fair to give tesco mobile opportunity to rectify first.

I assume that my friend will have to complain, because they are being charged, not me.
  • Hi Sunny, I would cancel your contract with ID now, it will only get worse. I've had a terrible experience with them. Their customer services and technical team - the ones with the answers are not able to communicate with each other by phone!!! I'm in France and being charged for calls to UK despite paying for their pricey Takeaway Plan. You're in for more stress if you stay with them. Cut your losses and go a more reliable provider.

I just called up to change my rolling plan to a more expensive one with more data and they stated that this wasnt possible yet from a technical perspective. They suggested i cancelled my account and rejoined...but they cant keep my number if i do this! It's ridiculous. I've complained but think i may be rejoining giffgaff at this rate.
  • Tesco mobile have told my friend that they now accept that it is an error on their part, that a number of people had raised it as a concern, that it would be rectified asap and that I do not live on the Isle of Man, which is a relief.

Will post again when they actually do correct the error.

ps this was not id mobile's fault. I have read a lot of bad things about them, but this shouldn't be added to that list.
