When I first started this thread, I was really puzzled as to what it might be.
Thank-you so much to all of you for your advice. Thank-you for the funny ones, the really made me laugh! Last night my son arrived home from London at 3am. I never sleep until I know he is home safely, even though he is 28. He went to his room and the tapping was present. He called me and I heard it. So, best to investigate while it is happening. The said wall, is indeed an original old wall, BUT, not all the way down to the hall. The upper staircase is original, but NOT, the lower part. Tracing the tapping, it got louder as I descended the stairs. The wall toward the lower part is a dividing wall to the next door flat, the tapping was easier to hear, as it is a kind of stud wall. Both flats, have side front doors, we have a large hall (room really), our neighbors have a small hall. On the other side of this wall (Mr Tapping wall), they have a bathroom as you enter their flat. SO, indeed their pipes are in the lower part, then run under their floor boards. Expansion, contraction, I would say. Our radiators make a similar sound in the winter, when cooling down to the night temperature. As we live upstairs, I never thought about the fact, that it might be next door. Naturally, the sound was muffled in Ds room, always sounds louder in the middle of the night. So, it is time to wind this thread back onto a spool, then archive it.
Bless you all, I will miss you.
