    All bats are protected

So are seagulls, unfortunately! We've got a colony of them on our roof and they make some very strange tapping sounds after about midnight during the summer months.

OP much as I like the idea of it being spooks or ghoulies :D I would guess it's some sort of animal or wildlife got into your loft. Is the noise very loud?
    I'm back.. :D:D

Ok, there was nothing in the loft. I even crawled right into the corners, NOTHING? The roof is only 19 months old, so all new and safe. So sorry, no squirrels, no bats, no birds, no mice, no rats, no nothing???? There was a loud crash from Ds room last night, even woke me up. When we all went rushing in. There was a picture hanging on the tapping wall, and it came crashing down in the early hours. For goodness sake!!! D said that whatever is in the wall, had pushed the nails out. Now we all know that is utter rubbish. It is an old internal wall, under the several layers of wall paper, the wall is constructed of lathe and plaster. All crumbly rubbish, I am sure they put horse hair in the mix, in those days. So, the nails just fell out, i guess. My next job, is to trace the said wall down to the under-stair cupboard. I will have to empty the cupboard out first.
    I will keep you posted.

I love night noises. I have tinnitus so I spend a lot of time listening to them.

Can you say the frequency of the tap, is it rhythmic or random?

Roughly how long does it last and how big are the gaps with no tap?

Can you post the file of the recording somewhere so we can listen?

Next time it is heard, go find the T-valve on your central heating (assuming you have one) and lightly touch it - perhaps the synchron motor on the valve is the culprit - the noises from these can travel a fair way at night though walls, you'll feel a vibration If it's this. does you water come on to heat in the night, either by CH or Immersion?

A recording, um. I would have to get my son to help with posting a file. He describes it as Rhythmic. The gaps with no tapping are for 5-10 mins. T-valve??? Do combis have them?
    Thanx Lorian.
Still loving the all the funny ones!

I am having the same problem as op,our "tapping" is coming from the bathroom ceiling.

I have a UPVC ceiling in there that is fastened up to the original wooden ceiling,it does sound like the noise is from the plastic.

Have taken the spotlights out and shone a torch under but there is nothing visible, likewise, the loft space above, have removed the insulation and spotlight fittings, again, can see nothing.

My Son has seen a few black beetles in his bedroom,I have put it down to these, not heard the noise for a few days now so have not got a clue.

So its a laughing plaster wall, ok. So they crumble eventually, and several layers of wall paper, could ir be that the wall is crumbling behind the wallpaper and the sound is the noise of bits falling down begin the paper?

We had a laughing plaster ceiling that just fell off when I was a child. And that was at night.

I think you mean 'lath and plaster' wall, not 'laughing plaster wall', Cheel :)

(Have you heard any laughing though, Tips? This may be relevant)
