Moved house, how do we set council tax up?

Hi, me and my partner have just moved house, it's our first time getting our own place and so far we are having difficulty setting up our council tax. This is because they require the council tax reference number for this property which we do not have. So far our local council has not responded to us but we want to get things set up asap. Any advice on how to sort this out at all please? Thanks

This has Local Authority reference number - I assume it's the same thing? Call your local council on Monday morning with this number they should be able to help.0 -
Generally, have a gander at your district, unitary, or borough councils website- there will usually be some info there. Failing that, give their customer service line a bell and give them your address and move in date, and they should send you a bill.
The above poster is talking about the property reference number. This might help the authority identify your property, but is not your council tax liability number. Your CT number is unique to both you and the property.0 -
Of course you could take an afternoon off work and go to to council offices and speak to them. They will give you a receipt of your visit. This then puts the onus on to them to ensure they register you on their system and send you a bill. If they fail to do so, then they will find it difficult to have any legal redress.Paid off the last of my unsecured debts in 2016. Then saved up and bought a property. Current aim is to pay off my mortgage as early as possible. Currently over paying every month. Mortgage due to be paid off in 2036 hoping to get it paid off much earlier. Set up my own bespoke spreadsheet to manage my money.0

I've always just rung up before giving name/ address/ move in date. Often set up payment there and then as well as DD0

My councils website has this on their website - allows you to register online using postcode & house number0

Whatever happened to actually speaking to a human being? Just call them, there is not an app for everything, yet.0

Or write them a letter (snail mail, unless they welcome emails on their online contact site) saying you've moved in; keep a copy, and save the equivalent (usually between £1-2k a year, so £100 odd per month) in the best savings account you can find. They should be so lucky that you're so keen!0

There might be a letter to "the new occupiers" (i.e. you) from the council which explains how to set up the Council Tax account.0

Is it a new build?
We moved in to one, and had to email the council to arrange for them to come round and assess the house before we could be put in a band.0
