One bonus regarding the diesel auto option is it does away with the troublesome dual mass flywheel. However many auto boxes are trouble enough in their own right.
While smooth and it doesn't harm fuel economy the VAG DSG auto is hesitant pulling out of junctions on a heavy throttle and isn't known for its longevity. It's also hugely expensive to replace if required, one friend of mine was handed a £6,000 quote to replace the box in his Audi TT V6.
Not sure about the auto box in the Mondeo or Insignia, neither option is popular but haven't heard of a problem but a quick net search will probably show up a few.
I'd avoid anything with a CVT (Continuously Variable Transmission) gearbox which are noisy and often troublesome.
Just bearing in mind so far you've had almost nothing positive to say except about 1.7 diesel Astras, just exactly what would You recommend based on your years of experience?
It's all very well telling people what not to buy, and picking out the odd point about other options, but so far you don't seem to have strung any of these things into a single cohesive bit of advice.0 -

Aside from helping someone by pointing out the weaknesses on some of the options suggested and making a recommendation of my own?
Fair enough.. The Astra is a good long term option and the Skoda Octavia is another at the budget. A Honda Civic estate or Accord (though the 2.2 diesel can suffer if neglected) but both are pricey and dear for parts. Toyota Avensis is another good big wagon but a bit dull.

so the Astra i posted a link to,is this the kind you were talking about?0

Mondeo is reserved it seems. Go and test drive one, you may like it.
I have the older shape and i love it. Lots to choose so be picky. You want receipts for work done..Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -

any thoughts on these two?0 -
Only that they appear to be the same vehicle, outside the same house. And that it's underpowered.
The 140 tdci mk4 Mondeo is not underpowered IMHO
I used them for a few months over in GWAS in 2008, in and around Bristol and Wotton Basset.
Lots of mid range punch and under 10secs to 60 with a top speed well over 125mph. Along with an easy 40mpg, over 50mpg is you try.0 -

I think you got your links mixed up on the previous post as they were both for the Titanium X estate.
The 160 version isn't that much faster in the real world than the 140.
I would go for the Titanium X and if you really want the bit of extra oomph then get it remapped by somebody like Superchips.0 -
one more question if i was to go for a skoda octavia estate, would a petrol or diesel be the better option?0
