If you want a Volvo (nowt wrong with that) get a V70.

How often do you need all the space? You might be more cost effective going for a trailer or roof box and running a smaller car, if you've got somewhere to store them.

If you go for a diesel the MPG is pretty decent, I would expect it will be better than other vehicles with similar off road ability. Which could be handy when you are camping.

The i40 is likely reliable but I would probably buy a Mondeo or as Loskie says a V70/XC70.

I had no complaints with my V50 other than the boot could be bigger and better shaped. They do come with roof rails for a roof box.

I have a Mazda6 estate. Comfortable for long distances, reasonably quick and economical, carries lots of stuff.

I have used it for the last four years to do the 675 mile round trip to DS1's university six times a year. Excellent load carrier and still plenty of power when full to the roof.

I've done 121,000 miles in it in just under 7 years

Another vote for Skoda. With a family of 5 it might be a bit of a squeeze in the back with an Octavia (I drive an Octavia estate so speak from experience) but a Superb should be plenty big enough with a massive boot for all your camping kit.

Skodas come with lots of toys as standard and are nice enough to drive for commuting.

For carrying space there's not many can beat an MB E Class Estate, maybe an E220Cdi. Also roomy enough for 5, and reasonably economical as a daily driver. I believe the E320Cdi is nicer - more grunt and smoother engine - but I have no experience of them, if you are interested it's be worth asking on a dedicated MB forum like mbclub.co.uk or mercedesclub.org.uk.
  • I ran a v50 1.6 drive e for 18 months and loved it until it came to service time due to the high cost and the Eolys fluid needs topping up as well.

If you do regular long journeys (to keep the CAT clean) and can find a decent local garage to service it it's a good choice. I didn't find it underpowered but then again I didn't buy it for performance.

My wife has just bought a new Ford Fiesta and in doing so we looked at the Hyundais which we thought had cheap interior plastics and poor build quality.

We also had a Hyundai i20 as a courtesy car which we thought was the worst car we've driven for years.
