    OP,

    Sorry for your loss.

Are you really sure that what you are going makes sense? Would the deceased feel that you are honouring their memory? Was there enough money left to afford a basic funeral?

My experience of FDs is that they do not try to sell you things in the way you fear. Of course if you go there in grief and seem confused by the process they will suggest what you should do. But if you explain exactly what you want they respond sensibly.

For example I recall being asked if anyone wishes to view the body. A tactful question, but what they mean is do you want the full body preservation process so that the deceased looks at their best? But if you say no, they will just do the legal minimum they have to and charge less. They will discuss such matters if you ask. Most people do not want to know.

Similarly if you want to arrange the service yourself, provide your own pall bearers, do not need a car just tell them.
Few people are capable of expressing with equanimity opinions which differ from the prejudices of their social environment. Most people are incapable of forming such opinions.

Ive not been pressurised by funeral directors either. My father was a friend of one,,who arranged my mother's funeral. Then we used them agsin for my father.

In Wales, you tend to have lots of mourners, but not all come back yo the house for refreshments as was the tradition.

Now the trend seems to be for posh buffets in hotels. Difficult to Oman for numbers.
