Puerto de la Cruz does have beaches, black volcanic sand ones though.
It's quite hilly so maybe not suitable if anyone has mobility problems.

I love the place but I'm not sure teenagers would
Change is inevitable, except from a vending machine.

    Hi all

We are trying to get a week away in early August and have spent nearly all day looking for holidays within our low budget. Time and again done holidays are coming up at ridiculously low prices to Kavos in Corfu and Peurto De La Cruz in Tenerife. The prices are VERY tempting but there must be a reason why sites like icelolly & onthebeach are selling holidays to these places for really low prices. We looked at reviews for Kavos itself but the confusing thing is that even though it has a reputation as a crazy party resort there are some decent hotel reviews on TA.
Come on guys... Spill the Beans :D

If you're going to book with companies like icelolly or on the beach then make sure you get the correct insurance that covers individual components. Generally when you ring to book those cheap prices aren't there. Have you looked at Jet2, Thomson or Thomas Cook these holidays are the prices they advertise.

No one in their right mind would want to go to the hell hole that is Kavos. 40 years ago when I first went to Corfu that part of the island was hardly inhabited. 3 years ago we accidentally ended up there after the jetfoil from Paxos broke down and the replacement service was a number of water taxis that dropped us off in Kavos where we were then thankfully rescued by a coach taking us back to Corfu town.

If you don't feel safe walking around a rougher English city in the early hours just after the clubs have chucked hundreds of drunk morons out into the street, you want to stay well away because it is ten times worse.
Our first holiday together was in Kavos.
30 years ago it was a sleepy village.

    I wouldn't be rushing back......

Although we did go to Malia - which also has a similar reputation to Kavos - but I did a bit of research and found that there's an Old Town with some decent tavernas.

In early September you wouldn't have realised it was party town unless you chose to go down 'The Strip' which we did once and never again.

    Went to PDLC in February.
We Loved it. We got direct BA flights to Tenerife North. It's very Spanish and much less touristy than the south.
Kavos is a kiddy drunk hellhole.

Agghhhh, all is explained! Thanks all. With our Two teenagers (15 & 13) it's fair to say we will now be giving Kavos the boot. PDLC still seems a little intriguing though although the lack of Beach is a major problem.
    Thanks again.
Thank god you're giving Kavos the swerve. ;)

I was there with my OH last Saturday. OH is a Greek passport holder and, whilst we had a hire care and the day to kill before our evening flight, he decided he wanted to see Kavos for himself.

Picture two 50 somethings in a white Fiat Panda careering down the main street of Kavos on a balmy Saturday afternoon. I don't know who was more shocked...us or the kids staggering out of bars and seeing us dodging the scooters and quads. :D It really is like a scene from the Wild West even at 3pm. We decamped futher north up the coast to the beautiful beach just past Melikia, and found a cool beach bar.

If you want a gorgeous, cheap hotel, try this one we stayed in last week... http://www.corfu3starshotel.com/ It's 30mins from Corfu airport and I couldn't recommend it highly enough. You have all the water sports you need literally in sight of the hotel's beach bar.

I just look at the reviews on TripAdvisor & if they mention stag, hen, the rep was great, or sunbeds .... then I just know that it ain't for me.

Kavos was my first abroad holiday ever about 25 years ago. It sounds like it hasn't changed a bit. I bet the sewers are still tiny too, you can't put toilet paper down the loo. Those scooters are bloody dangerous! Most of the time the steet is rammed with people, driving down there is impossible!

That still applies in many parts of Greece. It all depends on if a place is linked to the main sewerage system or has septic tanks. I know plenty of places in Athens that still have septic tanks, including my OH's house.
