Ok.. Spill the beans.. Why are Kavos and Peurto De La Cruz so cheap?

Hi all

We are trying to get a week away in early August and have spent nearly all day looking for holidays within our low budget. Time and again done holidays are coming up at ridiculously low prices to Kavos in Corfu and Peurto De La Cruz in Tenerife. The prices are VERY tempting but there must be a reason why sites like icelolly & onthebeach are selling holidays to these places for really low prices. We looked at reviews for Kavos itself but the confusing thing is that even though it has a reputation as a crazy party resort there are some decent hotel reviews on TA.
Come on guys... Spill the Beans :D

Puerto de la Cruz is in a less sunny part of Tenerife and quite a distance from TFS airport, or are you seeing flights to TFN airport ?

A few years ago I attended a seminar in Puerto de la Cruz. It's not the sun baked concrete jungle heaving with foreign tourists that the south is, and I would personally much prefer it for a holiday. It's a more local atmosphere, mostly Spanish tourists and various expats, small beaches, ancient hill towns with rustic restaurants etc. With a hire car you can easily tour the whole island of course.

Just a point... OnTheBeach and Icelolly don't sell package holidays (not in the sense Thomson and Thomas Cook do anyway). They just match a flight with hotels and transfers to put together their own package.

What I'm getting at is that if they have dirt cheap deals to Kavos and Puerto de la Cruz, then have a look at the flights to Corfu/Tenerife on those dates as they are probably reasonably priced. And you then may be able to find other hotel/apartments via other websites.

Ice Lolly don't sell anything. It's only a price comparison site, but yes, the companies that pay to advertise on there generally sell flight plus, like the majority of all OTAs do.

Kavos is a 18-30 loony place, and Kos airport is a bit of a nightmare. I suspect Kos in general is cheap due to news reports about refugees, more likely to affect Kos Town and Lambi than Kavos (although probably less of a problem than drunken Brits...).

Puerto de la Cruz is about the only main centre I'd go to on Tenerife these days (old git alert) - hell of a transfer from Tenerife South though. Dunno if you can get UK flights to Tenerife North, I've only used it for flights between the islands.

Kavos is literally full of 16 year olds getting wasted and vomiting everywhere. Its almost feral.

No one in their right mind would want to go to the hell hole that is Kavos. 40 years ago when I first went to Corfu that part of the island was hardly inhabited. 3 years ago we accidentally ended up there after the jetfoil from Paxos broke down and the replacement service was a number of water taxis that dropped us off in Kavos where we were then thankfully rescued by a coach taking us back to Corfu town.

If you don't feel safe walking around a rougher English city in the early hours just after the clubs have chucked hundreds of drunk morons out into the street, you want to stay well away because it is ten times worse.

Whoops pardon, mixed up Kavos and Kardamena (never been to Kavos, but reputed to be several orders worse than Kardamena - avoid would be good!).
  • Kavos is the 18-30 scene as correctly pointed out. Puerto de la Cruz is a longer transfer, about 90 minutes, it can get cloudy at times because it is so close to Mount Teide. Also, no proper beach, it has lidos. However, it is very Spanish, very green & lush and I love it there. South is more touristy but depends what you want. There are some lovely hotels there.
  • Agghhhh, all is explained! Thanks all. With our Two teenagers (15 & 13) it's fair to say we will now be giving Kavos the boot. PDLC still seems a little intriguing though although the lack of Beach is a major problem.
    Thanks again.
