However, OP, I'd like to ask something about the situation. Does the gate that you blocked lead out onto the pavement or public alleyway? and where can you go from that gate to your house obviously, but you say that the only other place the path leads to is an overgrown path that leads to some gardens?

So what you describe is "a path to nowhere" except your house/your garden. Unless the person goes down the overgrown path - which you doubt?

Or is the path a shortcut from one road to the other road? which would not be what the path is intended for, i.e. the path is intended for access to gardens not a throughfare.

As you are renting, I don't see the problem, just move on (and I do note you have decided to do this).

A diagram would be nice to better understand.

    Re: the note
It could have been written in blocks because the person doesn't want you to see their normal handwriting. and this could inturn be because they are ashamed of their normal hand writing, or their eyesight is bad and they find it easier to write in blocks. For example I have always considered it stupid WHEN PEOPLE THINK THIS IS BAD NETIQUETTE AND IT IS CONSIDERED SHOUTING all I see is the words written in block - nothing more.

They could have put 'please' but this could easily be an oversight. Also as others have said and you have acknowledged, you were the one in the wrong, (apparently), so there should be no need for the person to say 'please' as they actually have a right to be annoyed with you. However most of us have learned that politeness (at first) is usually the best policy, but it is not a requisite.

Google satellite picture? You can screen capture the picture and load it into photobucket so no-one will know where in the country it is taken from.
  • Hi Wig,

I wasn't going to continue posting as it seems to be feeding some animosity among some people, but since I am interested in what you make of it here's a satellite picture of the house. The actual size is in the inset, and I've blown up the pic to make it more clear.

    http://i234.photobucket.com/albums/ee15/privatepath/pathway.jpg

1 - the garden gate to the path.
2 - the garden gate to my front door

(I usually had the bike on the garden fence between these gates - not blocking either gate).

3 - My garden door from the path / alleyway.

I've drawn in a white line for the fence running alongside my neighbour's house (there is no access gate to his property on the path from the pavement to my garden door and beyond, and I think he gets access to his garden from his driveway, where the red car is parked).

The green line is around my house & garden.

As soon as you go past my garden door (#3), the path is overgrown and would need serious tackling to get through it.

Thanks for the pic, don't worry about the other MSEs - I'm sure everyone on the thread is (at the end of the day) sensible enough to understand that a picture says a 1000 words and will not begrudge us having a further discussion to clarify the situation.

It seems to me this really is a path to nowhere (except your No.3). Your neighbour probably has access to the path, but has removed his gate - you could look for evidence of the old gate position.

It seems the overgrown path also meets up with the rear lane at the opposite end to position 1, you could walk round there and see if there is another gate at that end and if there is any evidence of it bieng used. This could also explain it being used as a shortcut, and not by someone entitled to use it. They probably don't understand they are not entitled to use the path.

If the path really is unpassable, then I think you do have grounds to be annoyed with whomever, because they clearly did not intend on using the path they were just being obnoxious.

I think the most likely culprit will be your neighbour who is either
    1. One of the 4 allowed to use the path and was just making a point
    2. Not one of the 4 but mistakingly thinks it is a communal path for everyone and was just making a point.

However we really have no idea who it was, it could have been someone from 10 houses away who was incensed (thinking they know everything) that someone had blocked what (they think of as a communal path) not knowing it is actually only for 4 people and has become disused through being overgrown.

It's probably too late to ask your neighbour, "did you see who left this note on my bike last week" that would sound too weird.

I too would have been tempted to leave my bike there with a note on it saying, " if you wrote the note to me come and knock on my door, because I'd like to know what the problem is"

Also "communal" implies for everyone doesn't it? and it is only for 4 houses.
  • Thanks for your post and for understanding why I was initially peed off, and that just maybe I'm not the 'neighbour from hell #1' as a rule. :j

I am no longer parking the bike on the pavement at night as there is obviously someone with a grudge - I was also thinking along the lines you've mentioned about the culprits, so will not give them further ammo.

I don't want to move from this house as we really like it here so will avoid conflict if possible.

i agree with what wig said..... from the picture it looks as though there is a possiblity local people are using it as a shortcut or the most likely culprit will be the neighbour whose house the path also runs past
smile --- it makes people wonder what you are up to.... ;)
  • For private path , for me the photo is usless and tells you nothing really. As for please in a letter , sorry I would have done the same , the police, court and councils dont say please neither when your in the wrong.

Something tells me the property that has the number 3 over it is the number one suspect.

Whether anyone has acess to thier property further down the path though as I have said before has COMPLETELY nothing to do with you other than preventing it happen as you have done. This FACT obviously hasnt quite sunk in yet because you keep repeating it  , and I fear it never will.I suspect this ignorance is the bugbear of our night-time ninja note numpty , and was reciprocally met by the same ignorance in their omission of please in the offending note.

Another thing though is that if you do have acess the whole length of your "rented" property , there is two sizeable areas in the picture on which to store said offending bicycle , trailer , et al then thats all you need and are as entitled to.It the same acess for our noteman whether they use it or not is regardless  , same access as everyone along it and sadly to say that parking , storing , dumping is restrictive if not preventitive.

You said you werent going to post on this , neither was I tbh as its laughable now , head and wall springs to mind.To say your feeding animosity is a joke , your in the wrong , your being challenged and others disagreeing on it doest make it animosity ..... its obstinence on your part and differing (although morally and legally correct) opinion on thiers. Its that behaviour which no doubt is peeing of your neighbour. Its not even personal because your not even using your usual m.s.e.f name.

You will never have a resolve unless its the one you want , its not a geographical problem , or even contractual , or a border dispute , its an aurally directional one .... simply you hear what you want and steer others for it.

You want solice , forgiveness and support , feeling your the victim when your so much in the wrong , trying to find others to back you in any way possible. It would not surprise me if the "but im just a little woman" , "poor little single parent card just left a violent partner ", "medical reasons" , race card or even all of them is played next.Hopefully the real ones that should use the card , but dont , will hit you with some real animosity.

If i was your landlord reading this you would not be getting a renewed contract , and I suspect that this was the whole reason you decided to posts anonymously.I hope that was the reason other than being a troll.

Im sorry to other posters too if you find reality harsh , kid gloves are for kids not those that act like them.We live in a society where challenging those that do wrong is prevented by their rights even though they deny others theirs in the first place.

    Hamster,

I read half of your waffle. I was the one who asked privatepath to return to this thrread (I don't remember seeing PP say they would no longer respond maybe they did maybe they didn't - don't care, pooint is I asked PP to respond - with a pic)

I do think the situation changes when the path in question is a path to nowhere except PPs property.
What you seem to be waffling is that whoever wrote the note (assuming they are from one of the 4 groups entitled to use the path) should have a right to use the path in order to clear the weeds. I would agree with that, but seeing as the path is not in common useage by anyone other than PP, it is a really obnoxious thing to do in the manner they did it. Especially as they have so far not turned up to actually clear the path for their use since leaving the note.

It is clear that whoever left the note was doing it just because they are a grumpy obnoxious sod. And I have no sympathy for someone like that. On the other hand for PP I have every sympathy, they and they alone use this path. Of course PP would have moved the bike if the person had said I would like to go and clear the path for my own use.

So you tell me, what possible reason could someone have legitimately left that note?
  • Manners cost nothing and maketh the man - so you're looking for a grumpy rich woman!!;)

Webhamster - "move on ickle renter this isnt the place for you"? !!!!!! is that supposed to mean? People who rent arent good enough to post on your forum?

I cant understand your frustration with the OP but try not to collaterally insult anyone and everyone else who choses to rent.

    Thanks.
