Hi - sorry for delay - was doing supper.
Thanks for all the comments, and I will obviously move my bike and avoid further conflict. I'm probably too shy to go knocking on doors, although it is a really good idea.
and yes, a 'please' would have made ALL the difference.
Maybe other people do get really peed off by not having access to something they are entitled to even though they're not going to use it. (You have to see how blocked and overgrown the path is to appreciate this statement. I've just been out to look and there are nettle bushes mixed in with all the other undergrowth).
I know I wouldn't, so was possibly seeing it as someone out to upset me.0 -
Hi!
Our neighbours have right of way over our garden and I'm not 100% certain but I think it is our responsibility to keep it clear so it can be used even if no-one wants to use it. It's probably not really a bit issue - I'd just move the bike and ignore them. If people do want to use the access rights I think either you or your landlord would probably also be responsible for clearing the overgrown parts as well.
I do know how annoying it is to find a rude note though! I was really annoyed when I had parked outside my house - terraced street, no drives/garages and parking on both sides. Cars on one side of the street have to pull up onto the pavement otherwise the road would be blocked - not really an issue as far as I can see - pavement is clear on one side of the road but not the other. Anyway the note read:
"THIS IS A PAVEMENT NOT A PARKING SPACE. PLEASE PARK SO PEOPLE CAN GET AROUND WITH BUGGIES AND STICKS!"
Er, well I could do that but I suspect the police might tow it away for obstructing the highway. I wouldn't have minded but the pavement the other side was clear and there were other cars parked where I was and they didn't get notes!!!!
My husband thought it was really funny though so we did have a chuckle about it.

Sorry, but that's not the point.
You can be 99.9% certain that the deeds to the property you rent give certain other people an unencumbered right of access - no ifs or buts, they have access. It will be in their deeds too.
In addition, the owner of the path probably has a duty - again in the deeds - to keep the path clear.
Now then .... if the owner of the house you rent also owns the path, then it is their responsibility to keep the path clear. But this may have been passed on to you, as the tenant. So are you sure that your tenancy agreement has nothing about keeping this path clear?Warning ..... I'm a peri-menopausal axe-wielding maniac0 -
Sorry beforehand but i have to agree with the anonymous note person , not with you or the sheep.Heres the cold hard truth bit that some may find hurtful in these days of denial , blame others culture , and rights of the selfish ignorant rules supreme.
CORRECT me if im wrong but its a private path (with communal acess) and you blocked it off and its not your owned acess or land being the renter , and your feeling hard done by because the note never said please to move your !!!!!!! bike?If your ignorant enough to do it in the first place then how can you blame such a similar response.Get a grip or wiki selfish and ignorant.
Whether the path past your acess is overgrown is quite frankly nothing to do with you and more of your landlords responsibility , you still have an obligation to not block it off.Blocking off acess has though got something to do with you if its your bloody bike doing the blocking , the poster of an offensive and abrupt peice of paper obviously thought so.Poor you , having to remove such an offensive item , how dare they do such a despical thing.
Folk have been killed in neighbour disputes , left handicapped , jailed or scarred for life....police now say do not approach neighbours AT ALL , sad but these are the days in which we live.
Take heed , I think your on a loser here despite the posters agreeing with you. If this person feels threatened enough to post anonymously then its a polite warning .... this time.Next time we could be reading about your demise from the hands of Joe father of 2 snapped and nailed polite note to head of ignorant cyclist that read "ok then , wil you PLEASE move your !!!!!!! bike".
Move on ickle renter , this is not the home for you.0 -
I don't know for sure, but I don't think there's anything in the ta about the path, I was just told about this by the agent.
there's no flipping way I'd clear the rest of the path.....0 -
Thanks Webhamster - you've given me a great script idea:beer:
Wouldn't like to come across you in a dark alley though (I think you have 'ishooos')0 -
so have all us super heroes then that fight for what is right.
I dont have issues , no one has blocked off my hamster cave with a mountain bike , but i am sure i have something to fix that in my utility belt.
why would you be in a dark alley , someone lock up you bike to teach you a lesson and have to take a short cut?0 -

I think you need to do two things:
1. Move your bike when you get a chance.
2. Really make an effort over the next few weeks and months to get to know your neighbours. It's only ever imtimidating when you don't know them. Just start by saying, "Hello, how are you?" every time you see a neighbour outside and make a point to never ignore them if you see them out and about. So many people don't bother and this is what can lead to misunderstandings like this.
It will also help with your paranoia levels tooas you'll know exactly who you are dealing with in future.
Don't mention the note to anyone usless you really want to. It may or may have not been one of the neighbours who have the access. Either way, it's probably better to try and put it behind you as it's quite a stressful to have happened when it's anonymous like that.
If things haven't improved by Decemeber, then Christmas is also an ideal opportunity to get to know your neighbours (by sending cards so everyone know each other by name, or knocking with bottle of wine or chocolate if you're braver).
"One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -
It could be that they didn't realise the effect the message would have - perhaps they just didn't think it through properly, or maybe they didn't want to approach you directly in case you were aggressive. They may not necessarily want to cause a problem - most people don't really like conflict. If they did, I think it is more likely they would have knocked on your door shouting the odds!
Or could it be that in fact someone is a bit put out that you have done all this work without asking them? Strange I know, but it could make someone think that you are being a bit too forward, and may not see that actually what you have done is of benefit to everyone.
I would knock, or if you aren't feeling brave enough, put a note through each door and saying that you didn't mean to cause a problem. Straight down the line, the bike shouldn't really have been there, and by continuing to leave it there, someone else could see you as the aggressor, not the other way around.I have had many Light Bulb Moments. The trouble is someone keeps turning the bulb off
