  • WCS Not sure if it's Nice english guidelines or our local nhs trust but neither daughters Methotrexate or Pregablin ( lyrica ) are available here both very effective but not allowed for those illnesses to over 60s
I am aware both are costly but her joint damage is not advancing as rapidly as mine did and I am glad of the advances made since the 50s and 60s .

  • Polly I'll ask when I go back to the clinic in November but suspect it's an NHS Trust issue rather than NICE guidelines - I take metho and without it I can barely walk. My further joint damage has been minimal since starting it, and the bones in my spine have now fused, making me much more comfortable so long as I keep pottering. Other than my spine it's in my knees, elbows, shoulders hands and feet, to varying degrees. I find the tiredness harder to manage than anything though.
  • WCS I will check those meds again for England as I wastold that a few years ago .
I am sorry PM£s I took your thread off topic and possibly stopped you getting helpful advice . I did subscribe and will continue to read and post here :)
I have challenged my wimpy IT skills and started another thread on the subject of ill health and os ways and perhaps if people are interested it will keep things on topic across os

Hiya, you mention using laundry capsules and being very expensive. Well I found these things by Ecozone called Ecoballs (!). they are a bit of an initial investment at £15, but I decided to try them and they are amazing! They last for 1000 washes and you can then buy refills of the stuff inside so a bit cheaper. You just put them in the machine with your washing and that's it. The only thing is there is no scent which doesn't bother me at all but some people like it, so they say you can put a couple of drops of essential oil in if you want a scent :)

    Hope that helps someone! x

Loads of great stuff on this thread, I'm feeling inspired! Particularly by JackieO and lessonlearned though - I'm always fascinated by the make do and mend culture, and about rationing and how you meal planned.
I'm actually vegan, so I wonder if you both would be able to come up with any wartime/ration-style recipes for me? Milk is easily substituted for plant milk, but eggs aren't so easy. I suppose beans instead of meat and of course lots of veggies? Would be interested to see what type of thing you come up with?

  • Hi elsiepac, I think it would have been really difficult to get your protein as a vegan. We are dairy and egg free, and use a lot of wartime recipes, but most use either small amounts of meat or the extra cheese ration for vegetarians.
One fav recipe of ours is lemon curd which substitutes eggs for courgettes - lovely!! Most recipes can be baked by missing out the eggs and using a splash of plant milk. Lentils were used a lot for faux chops, rissoles etc, but I don't think they're a complete source of protein?
Another favourite dish is butter beans and mushrooms - done in a white sauce, with a crumble-type topping - non-vegans can sprinkle some cheese on top.

No need to apologize. Hope things go well for you. I'm doing fairly well focussing on using things up and I spoke to the kids about not buying fancy drinks and just having water or dilute juice in refillable bottles for school and that I will bake them snacks instead of buying kid style snacks for their schoolbags, they were so enthusiastic it was great. I'm filling up the sink with hot soapy water to wash the dishes instead of letting the hot tap run...:o

Not buying treats for the kids saves a lot such as a new pack of pencils or a magazine. It adds up so fast and they weren't really appreciating the things anyway.

Staying off Amazon helps too. I was terrible for buying used books for 1p...with £2.80 p&p then not reading them. So I'm reading all the books I have (then de cluttering them) and making a note of any books I want to read which I will then either source from the library or ask for for Christmas.

It's amazing how we start buying stuff or spending tons of money on nothing - and don't even notice it.
  • Amazon is my failing or rather a particular seller on there . I will never pay full price although I used to preorder new books I've kicked that habit and am now leaving a book in the basket for a few days and not buying on impulse and 9 times out of 10 I don't go ahead and buy .
As a life long buyer of books it is hard but giving myself the chance to consider seems to make a difference .
