Why would anybody think an ISP giveaway is going to be top quality when so many customers move on as soon as the minimum term is up or sooner if a price increase coincides with a good deal elsewhere?

If you want a router with the latest WiFi tech and anything beyond the most basic routing features figure on buying your own.

You may be better just putting in a Powerline system

This from Maplin is a good starting point.

You can put the wireless bit anywhere in the house. If coverage is still not good enough, then just add another wireless unit.

Not cheap, but it certainly works.

Some free routers will be better than others.

    Currently looking at netgear.

Maplin have this 1 for £40.

Netgear is a well known brand, you say cheap but how cheap ?

I've had that Netgear one for a few months. It is much more reliable than the Edimax router that it replaced but it doesn't have an external aerial connection so you are limited to the built-in antenna - which reaches to my workshop at the bottom of the garden so it isn't too bad. If you need something better I'd think about using a separate access point linked to the router via a network cable.

Well I took on your comments and purchased a netgear DCN2000 with two external aerials ! (my current one has 1 external).
I thought the more the better! I notice some even have 3.

    For less than £5.

    Result, well its ok ish.

Interestingly the broadband line speed is about 1.5Mbps better which is interesting.

But the WIFI range is no better. In fact worse than my ancient Siemens.
