Good Router (WIFI Range)

I would quite like to purchase a good and cheap router off ebay which has good WIFI range for an old house.

I was thinking of a BT homehub as they made a lot of fuss about these being good.

Any recommendations ?

Would they not provide you with a wifi router ?

IO have no idea if any good but TrendNet have cheap routers on amazon.

Maplin have this 1 for £40.

Netgear is a well known brand, you say cheap but how cheap ?

You say an old house, how old as wireless can get weaker in an old house due to the thickness of the walls. Were you wanting to use the wireless in another room ?

    This Netgear from Ebay

I found their latest router is useless.

I do have one of their older Siemens ones which is ok.

I have a BT router with my Plusnet connection. The TT router wouldnt work with my connection.

Wireless is rubbish, i got so impatient waiting for large files to transfer i ran cables instead. Never had an issue since.

  • I never rated the wireless on the homehub 4 I tried for a bit. I found an Apple Airport Extreme with a separate modem to be best.

Home Hub 5 has excellent wifi i find .
You can buy the new Home Hub circa £125 .
Asus range are also good but look to spend around the £150 mark for quality routers .

I guess I was hoping one of the ISP's would include a good router which I could buy 2nd hand off ebay for not a lot of money. :money:

This being a place where people change ISP's every 12m I thought someone would have a good knowledge of good and poor routers. :)

Current one isn't bad, but if there was a good one for not a lot of money I would be interested :money:

Don't really want to be have a seperate modem and WIFI if I can help it.

If your current router doesn't give you the range you want, there might not be a big difference if you use a different one (unless you specifically get one with a high-gain aerial).

You might be better running an Ethernet cable from your current router to a different part of the house, and using a second router as an additional wireless access point.
