We have a Ford S-Max diesel which I would highly recommend.
Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,
You don't even take him seriously,
How am I going to get to heaven?,
When I'm just balanced so precariously..

My sister's wasn't. She swapped it for a Land Rover Discovery as she needed something more reliable.

I had a Galaxy - it was lovely but was hugely expensive to run. It was fuel inefficient and the tyres cost £250 each to replace - and they only lasted around 8-12 months before wearing out.

It would have helped if you'd said that earlier!

The Vauxhall Zafira has been mentioned several times. They are currently going cheap, but that is for a reason: we know about 300 that have gone on fire in the heating system behind the glove compartment burning out the car completely. Vauxhall has a first recall running; a second recall for the same issue will start in August and even then some us don't trust that it fully solve the issue.
The affected Zafira is the B model (built 2005-2014); not the A and Tourer. It especially effects the manual and aircon models, but the ECC (electronic climate control) models are still affected in lower numbers (even though Vx says it isn't affected).
If you are still considering buying, then have a look at www.facebook.com/groups/vauxhallzafiracarfires/ first for some of emotions and fears some of the owners are dealing with.
I own one and like it, but not being able to use the fan/heater from Oct 2015 till it will have the recall somewhere second half of 2016 isn't nice especially with a holiday to France coming up (I will still use the fan at my own risk).
    Just be warned.

We had a Zafira (before they started self-combusting) and currently have a VW Touran. Both are a 2:3:2 configuration.

The back seats have very limited leg room, they're really only suitable for small children or short, skinny people. If you're talking about gangly teenagers then it would need to be a very short journey as it's not very comfortable with knees up to your chin.

When all 7 seats are in use there is very limited room for luggage so if you're considering a school run with 6 school bags and possible PE kit etc. on top that could be a problem too.

    My max budget is £1500

Are you missing a zero off the end?

To get a 7 seater MPV for less than £1,500 you're going to be looking at something that has done over 100K miles, is virtually on it's last legs or is a category D or C.

If I saw anything with less than 80K miles going for that price i'd be very suspicious about buying it!

    Debt-free and Proud!
Just looked at 7 seaters on autotrader for under £1500. Pretty much every zafira is spares or repairs because of engine knock.

Do vauxhall owners not bother with oil changes?

I was going to suggest a ford tourneo grand connect but you'll need a bit more! Fab car, loads of space & my favourite feature - sliding doors
