iphone storage - space taken up?

Hi,
Using my PC, I periodically cut and paste photos off my iphone to free up space for more photos. I keep photos and videos on there that I'm particularly fond of. I noticed the other day that the storage on my wife's phone differs to mine - The Used and Available amounts both total the same but she has twice the amount of photos that I do. I don't have as many apps either, so it's not apps that are taking up the space.
It's led me to wonder if it's possible that my phone is using up part of the hard drive by saved 'archived' or 'hidden' photos. Is this possible? If so, can i do anything to gain this space back? Hope this makes sense on a Monday morning!

all photos are not the same size.....
I don't understand ?- Both phones hold around 11.6 GB
- Mine has 3.5 GB in Photos and Camera and my wife's has 7.3 GB.
- The difference of 3.8 GB is not being used by apps which average, let's say, 100 MB each, as that would be hundreds of apps which I simply don't have installed...

She has twice the number of photos, so her photo usage is not unsurprisingly roughly twice as much.
When you connect to iTunes, what does it say the usage for apps, photos etc is?0 -

You say you have less apps, but the apps you have appear to be using more space then hers. You have more that are using greater than 100MB.0

to put it in simpler terms, all of your invidual photos might be twice the size of her individual photos, no 2 photos are of equal size you cannot say she has twice as many photos by looking at the storage usage.0

I agree - that part is straightforward. But my question is what makes up the shortfall of 3.5 GB? Why I can't I access this and save more photos/videos?Increasingly money-conscious
