single beds pushed together

Hi all -
I've recently returned from a stay at a Hilton where I paid for a double and ended up with 2 singles pushed together. I complained (didn't really expect that at the hilton) and was told they were 'zipped together' rather than pushed so it was okay. It actually made things worse as there was a big bulging zip in the middle of the bed.
At either rate it's got me thinking how it's okay for hotels to do this? I've stayed at a few recently where the beds were just pushed together and it's so frustrating. For my mind you pay for a double, you should get a double. I'm a graphic designer and if someone asked me for an A3 brochure I don't think I could just tape two A4's together!
Have checked hilton's t&c's and no mention, and booking clearly stated KING size bed (i think two singles doesn't equal a king does it?)

I am not sure about the do's and dont's around this but two single beds do equal one king size in width at least.0

Thanks hammers81uk. I guess that might be what they're holding onto, but for me it's still not a king!0

It is standard in most hotels, certainly every hotel I have ever stayed in from budget to high end. They use the exact same rooms for twin or double, if you want twin the beds are pulled apart, if you want double the beds are pushed together. You can't expect them to have storage for hundreds of extra beds, what if one particular night every guest wanted a twin room?
A king size bed is a set size, it doesn't matter if it's two attached together or one whole bed, the size is the same.
My own king size bed at home has a divan base that is split in two obviously so that it could be easily brought into the house, by your reckoning my own bed is not kingsize because the base has two completely separate parts with just a basic metal bracket to hold the together with no solid fixings.0 -
At least with a big zip in the middle you'll be able to demonstrate that she is taking more than half of the bed!"The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people's money"0

Another time ask for a bed for someone over 6'. You will certainly get a different bed & mattress, but whether you like it/find it comfortable is another question.

I must admit that I have never stayed at a hotel where the bed has been two single pushed together, zip and link style, the only time iv had that is at family friendly cottages on the coast.0

Stayed and worked in lots of hotels that do that it allows them more flexibility for bookings it's quite common practiceFirst Date 08/11/2008, Moved In Together 01/06/2009, Engaged 01/01/10, Wedding Day 27/04/2013, Baby Moshie due 29/06/2019 :T0

The only valid complaint the OP might have is that the zip holding the beds together was uncomfortable. However, most people would be sleeping on one side of the bed rather than in the middle...0

Ten years ago, or so, I worked as an on-site engineer and would stay in hotels all over the country. As far as I can recall, every double room had a proper double bed.
More recently I've stayed at a couple of hotels in London and Amsterdam where they did this, but it was pretty rare. Very annoying, as I was used to sleeping in the middle of a double bed and kept falling down the gap!0 -
Yup, I get why they do it. Just for my mind it should be clear what you're getting. We stayed in the Hilton for our 10 year anniversary and it's just a little disappointing to get a worse bed than at premier inn.0
