Just wanted to thank you for invasion tale ,I used to get so much enjoyment from the 'flights of fancy on the Garden Fence before they all decamped, got me through some very hard timesMy pleasure, Sue, I am rather prone to imaginative diversions along the byway of life, although I didn't follow the Fencers (too busy on other threads) so don't know what they were up to.
The scary thing is, whole countries have been invaded with no better motives than described above, such as the (eventually) successful Roman invasion of these islands which was done with ships sponsored by the senatorial families of Rome as a controlled looting exercise. As just one of many examples...........!Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Hello Sue
Hmm. There's many a true word spoken in jest GQ An aphorism I've always wanted to use :rotfl: :rotfl:
Hmm. There's many a true aphorism too it would seem . . .
DforV Iodine doesn't go off, as far as I know, and it's antiseptic and cleansing. I see no problem applying it to to the wounds of others. I'm a great fan of Dettol - love the way it changes colour when you add it to water - though the family are less than enthusiastic.
Jojo Thank You for the tweezers recommendation. Never heard of them so of to consult google shortly.
All of our candles, torches, batteries, and camping stoves and assorted fuels have now been checked. We had only one AA battery left so I've added them to the weekend shopping list
Today I'm auditing preserves and honey. As we had over 400 jars of honey BEFORE we took off this year's harvest, and as I seem to have created the chutney mountain of the North West, I may be some time.
And yes, we did sell it, but honey will keep for thousands of years (found in Ancient Egyptians tombs and still viable) and our bees are no more so this lots staying put).
When IT happens apply to me for some sweetness.0 -
Thanks for the welcome , I need to start prepping more efficiently .OH has Parkinson's and I suspect I will shortly be the only driver ,
Mostly cook from scratch ,do have a comprehensive dressings kit ,(to cope with the falls )
Fancy the raid on Carrefour ,we used to go with old friends on a yearly 'geriatric booze cruise ' the car used to groan on the way home .
All purely medicinal ,of course !0 -
Majestic in Calais will pay your fare over if you pre-order enough booze (at French prices) We have done that before now, stocking up for Christmas. Go to a Majestic in the UK, decide what we want and then pre-order. We used to make a day of it in France- we are about 45 minutes from the Tunnel so it's quite easy for us, but Calais is quite a downbeat place to be these days, and since they dismantled the Jungle, a lot seem to have shifted to the industrial estate where Majestic is situated. Very sad for the local businessesIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0

Suffolksue - stay in touch with these friends & keep up the trips? Loneliness & low morale can also be prepped against!
Jojo - tweezerman pointed - something like these? And I do like a bodhran even if Nothing gets my scouts to keep in step. [Even Remembrance, blush.]
GQ if you want to repossess assorted structures, you may need to kidnap some of the St.Fagans & Avoncroft lot - they may not have quite the Lego experience but they relocate buildings for the tourist industry (fun *&* profit). Leave them the embroidery - or swap the Reading "copy" for the original... (What do you plan to tell assorted parts of the world they want their heritage back? I mean Pitt Rivers did at least pay for his stuff (and what a haul! You really can't keep a well financed eccentric down...) but the Greeks might not feel they'd seen the receipt for the Elgin marbles etc)
A Customs pal told me of a father & daughter & horsebox trip. They returned, intelligently & wholly legally, laden with case after case of the good stuff.
"All for personal use?"
"Yes!" beamed the lass (as her father grinned a bit ruefully) "Do you want to come to the wedding?" & held out a pair of the traditional heavy stock embossed tickets.
It was their horsebox, and her father smiled wryly that by buying in volume, on site, with his charming daughter, they had saved enough to afford most of the rest of the trimmings she wanted...
I never did hear if Customs attended the event, but I approved the thoroughness with which the family set about the procedure.0 -
Proper Planning Prevents etc
Mindful that when we shared monarchs we also shared castle architects, I've had a quick dekko at Google. As ever, start in the guise of the innocent tourist (bows to be disguised as walking sticks or re-packaged as a familiar sold-to-tourist-memento, other weapons to be stashed in picnic hampers etc.)
[Mother of sons here. I have hiked lads in full mail & carrying sharp steel through castles & everyone over 1 metre away thought I'd been knitting & they'd played with cardboard & tinfoil. Heavens No - but some strongly worded negotiation over photo opportunities & Polo mint rations had preceded these strolls.]
Our own Fort Risban has not fared well at the hands of time. Reduced to an air raid shelter, ye gods. The citadel has a touching memorial to our chaps who fell there in 1940, so not only should we retake it (& hold it) but we'd better take something by way of armaments &/or explosives &/or use their own kit back at 'em.
Fort Nieulay will need a bit of work before we can use it as a secure storage location, but if we can get the water cooperating - reinstate locks etc, it should do for a preliminary base. Photos suggest sheep, so some food on site, but bring your own ration packs and look to supplement. Frankly, once you're in, you should be laughing.
The other places? Bless wikipedia - if it says something is ruins, we can probably shrug it away but fragments & reconstructions, especially the latter, could be challenging. Those who can fund restoring a castle usually add some modern security refinements to keep the tourists/peasants at a respectful distance.
It'll be getting into the work of James of St. George d'Esperanche (chap trained on Philip 1 Count of Savoy's payroll, recruited by Edward 1 & worth every tuppence) that will require advanced guile once word of GQ's imperial ambitions leaks.
Bear in mind when our Prince of Wales was youthful & draped in ermine by his proud Ma at Caernarfon in 1969, it Could Be Held By 8 Archers. (OK so they cheated, & gave them machine guns & radio communications as well as more bodies.) Now, we have an airborne risk to consider, let alone those drone thingummies, although if we make it clear we're at this not just for personal gain but for our beloved monarch, she may decide to send some of the Salisbury lot to back us up.
That we'll send tribute to the Exchequer should flummox Westminster into relative quiet, especially if we send the front page type stuff. There're some suitably impressive looking things in the Louvre we could ship back to appease doubters?0 -
:T:T:T:T:T Bravo, DigForVictory, you are now appointed to Madame Generalissimo for the Campaign. Please do bring some Sons and spare Scouts, too.
I recall with some amusement a tale told by an archer about some folk he knew who had been in Forn Parts on one of those newfangled aeroplane thingummies, and who were detained by security on their way back through the home terminal. About thirty of 'em.
Prithee, whyfor? Ermm, the several Swords and Daggers each of these re-enactors were carrying in their carry-on baggage. Several of those upstanding fellows were renowned experts with these weapons.
They were placed in a lounge with one (unarmed) guard and all their weapons, while TPTB had a good think about what laws were being broken and what they could do about it.
One of the swordsman smiled at the guard and pointed out that any of them could kill him, if they so chose, in under 5 seconds, and there was nothing anyone could do to stop it. He swallowed audibly, and was happy when his Management decided that the least-worst option was to let the re-enactors go off about their business.:rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
