  • West bank of the Tamar? The opposite side from my original home, some way north of the city, on the western edge of the Moor. Beautiful country, lovely people; my father's family nearly all lived on the western side or "further down" towards Truro. I'd jump at it, Jojo... but now all my family live "up here"!

Cleared out & cleaned one of my "Armageddon cupboards" yesterday & today. I'm ashamed to say that there will be a bin-bag of out-of-date stuff heading to the Tip; TBH I'd happily use most of it up as not much is far OoD, but it's all stuff that no-one who lives here full-time now actually likes! Plus there'd been a small visitor in there, now fortunately deceased thanks to the kittens, so any packets of dried stuff that are in the least bit suspect are going out too. I think I can use the space better, some of it to house the current round of preserves - raspberry & quince jelly under construction right now.

Draw a straight line from your childhood home and you'll find it. ;)

Argh. How (and when) did a moth get into my tin of oats? Just as well there were only a couple of portions left. It was the one thing I'd assumed was fine in the Great Disposal of Contaminated Foodstuffs Debacle.

[adds them to the online shopping list]

I'll definitely need to prepare for Armageddon if we get there. None of this empty fridge and cupboards business; I can imagine it's cut off quite comprehensively in winter.
I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.

If it helps, Jojo, some years ago we were on holiday at Carbis Bay in February and it was pretty stormy, heavy rain and very strong winds (it was the year when there were bad floods in the West Country). I asked the hotel receptionist if the papers would get there that day (I couldn't imagine that they would); she looked astonished and said "Of course! This is just normal weather!" and that was further West than you'd be going.
  • Mardatha Internet at my sister's is very limited but today I'm in Nantes trying to sort out a flight back to the UK and I'm just sitting in the airport and using their free wi fi. I've been here almost a month and seen very little of anything as My sister lives in a hamlet of four houses, two of which are holiday homes. It's a twenty minute drive to the nearest large village with a shop and I don't drive so I'm really pretty much housebound and missing my forums and friends far more than I'd ever realised that I would. My sister has had three knuckles on her right hand replaced and I've mainly cooked, cleaned, preserved fruit and veg and worried about MrC. It's not been a barrel of laughs. My b-in-law is not my favourite person and longer term than usual daily contact has been very wearying. Please could you let Fuddles know for me that I'll pm her when I get back.
This house might on the surface seem an ideal location for a prepper heavily into self sufficiency, but the one thing I've realised is that if the s h t f holing up with the wrong people would be a huge, huge mistake 😂😂
I'd better finish, my b-in-law will soon be here to collect me and I've other emails to send. Lovely to be able to catch up with you all.

Wow, Cappella, you poor thing, sorry to hear all of that. And what an important point you're raising - hole up with the wrong people, even wrong-for-you, not necessarily bad'uns, and it would create a real problem. I'm glad you'll be back here soon.

Hurry back, Cappella, you know what they say, East, West, Home's best!
One life - your life - live it!
  • Sorry you've had such an unsatisfactory month Capella but it's a good thing to have learned to be very careful who you choose to be with should there be problems. I think there would always be teething problems in any diverse group who weren't together from choice or common ground but to actually have to be with people who make your teeth itch all the time would be impossible.

The news is from the Daily Wail so I'm not being worried by it but they are saying today that Katla, the bigger of the two Icelandic volcanos one of which erupted and grounded flights for weeks is stirring and it's usually one that erupts every 60 years and it's been 100 years since the last eruption so it's overdue by their reckoning. It's caused problems over Europe before and over the UK and the biggest eruption actually killed 1/5th of the population of Iceland mostly due to flooding from melt water but also from not being able to use the land (even here in the UK) because of the amount of ash that fell so there was hunger and it caused health problems too. I felt this ought to be in the prepping awareness domain and it's not because I'm scared but because if it does happen we'll all need our Armageddon cupboards in earnest!

Aw Cappella, sorry things aren't too good :( We are missing you too xx

ETA Lyn, I've just seen your post. Thanks....I think....still forewarned is forearmed, eh!

ETA again! Apparently scientists say the story, originally in the Times, is "fabricated" and that there is no evidence that there's likely to be an eruption, and that the research team never claimed there was going to be one.

    Time will tell

Joyful news! For all seeking glass for storage - Home Bargains have Eerin mason jars (99p/1l) back in their shelves - also spring clip lidded ones.

Being a right trusting soul, before checking the trolley for soundness & load capacity or sorting a lift, do please call your local store & check?!

    Is this news Too Late?

Capella - this is why preppers need to know how to dispose of bodies. In a hygienic & environmentally friendly way, of course.
