  • Hello all, been MIA as we have been on holiday , came back on Monday and it hasn't stopped raining since. Sorry think it must be my fault as we had glorious weather while we were away !
By heck Mrs L there are no flies on you or HWK ! I wish we could be that organised :o. You are now officially settled in if you have unpacked your books :D
Bought some mixed dried fruit today ready for the Christmas cakes, shame Ald*s didn't have any, had to get some from Morries :(.
I have spent the day baking crumbles and tarts using some of the fruit from the freezer, now I shall replace the fruit with my baked goods. Hey ho so much for making a bit of room in there, as it's still stuffed to the gunnels . I wanted to make some room for Christmas goodies but I seem to be taking one item out and replacing it with two or three :rotfl:
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently

Be calm - Stir Up Sunday isn't until November 25. Although I'll bet the supermarkets are loading their shelves with it as soon as the Halloween stuff is removed. Well done planning it though - far too many children just do not get either the stirring of the mixture let alone the collect that is the crib... [I get a nudge from my mother when she calls me to source more sixpences for her!]
If this thread needs a formal motto would this do?

They're already selling mince pies! Husband delighted - he'll eat them all year round. M, I regard them as having a season (Dec 1-31) & eating them out of season as poor form (as I love them too & my waistline shows it)

He Who Knows has his rod licence already? Awed. That must be a fearsome to do list you've worked through, but shows the absolute repose that comes from knowing what you need to do & working through it! A cousin who works in IT used project management tools to emigrate coherently to Canada & it all "just happened". It was seeing the door with all the stickums & stamped as done ones that clued you as to how much thought was involved - he tried a list & switched tools when it went into 6 A4 pages...

Trouble with waiting until StirUp Sunday is I like to make my mincemeat and pudding with apples from the tree in the garden so that’s better done now
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!
  • I was just thinking, mincemeat, looking at a pile of apples & quinces, so you are not alone, maryb!

Off to nick one of DS3's Latin textbooks... Google Translate turned DfV's quote into gibberish, and my "A" at "O" level was quite some time ago...

Something about the act of working to pursue your goals (the fruits of your labour) gives you a glimpse of the divine? Sounds like it might have come from the Book of Common Prayer or some such tome.

Never actually learned Latin at Scumbags Comprehensive. Or much about religion. It probably shows.

We *might* [T&Cs apply, stocks may go down as well as up, tenants may prove to be right royal PITAs at the end of their tenancy] be fetching up in SIL's old flat in Cornwall this time next year.

There is a rail service. Sort of. And a bus. Ditto. The boat service sounds more reliable for at least some of the year (I can see myself making friends with somebody who has a boat just to ensure I can get to whatever employment I secure). And there are two pubs.

I'm not bothered about 'Stuff', as I do believe Cornishmen have, make and sell furniture as well (although disposing of the current stuff all in advance would be a nightmare and I do have the very expensive fridge, freezer and vacuum cleaner which I will not be separated from), but I think we'd definitely have to get into full blown prepping for inclement weather.

I wonder what his sister's opinions are of chickens in the back garden?

Mea culpa- it's nicked straight off the Stir Up Sunday Collect
Stir up, we beseech thee, O Lord, the wills of thy faithful people; that they, plenteously bringing forth the fruit of good works, may of thee be plenteously rewarded; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Excita, quaesumus, Domine, tuorum fidelium voluntates: ut divini operis fructum propensius exsequentes, pietatis tuae remedia maiora percipiant: Per Christum Dominum nostrum. Amen.

It struck me as being a season-loose way of saying lay in a judicious stash & all will be blessed - barring mites!

maryb - quinces! A glorious fruit, makes a wonderful easy setting jelly & that then cuts into delicious little nibbles. (My quince tree has not survived the weather, but I had such plans & will plant more.) Glorious scent too, I'm told.

Jojo - Cornwall? the infrastructure is much less good than you may wish but I'm sure sister-in-law will learn to appreciate chickens eventually. It's the possibly-needing-a-boat to get to work that worries me. It's serious weather down there. Ask any Excise person - being shoved off a cliff is only part of the job, checking legitimate shipping is safe is another swathe. Also in some weathers even helicopters might struggle to get meds in, unless you were at the eastern end... Panicking in advance here. There are also good robust cobs that'll just put their heads down & stump on, so as long as your work has some kind of stabling, all should be possible. Cobs can swim, too. Rather better than buses & trains.
  • Go, go, go Jo Jo, what a fab opportunity. Grab it with both hands and don't let go and move yourselves to that wonderful part of the country. My best friend moved last year and my lovely nephew has moved in the last week to a new job down in Cornwall. Best friend is so very happy, has a new life and new friends and nephew is a 'surfer dude' so I know he'll be happy. Opportunity doesn't knock on lifes door twice...DO IT GIRLIE!!! xxx
  • Well, it's not the trickiest part - it's on the West bank of the Tamar. Exceedingly pretty. And at least we wouldn't have to spend out money on credit checks or having to deal with lettings agents for at least a year, by which time I'm trusting that I've got vaguely acclimatised to the situation. I am a bad person, though - I did quickly check whether Messrs Waite & Rose include the place in their delivery area from Saltash, which they do, before confirming to a slightly excited Himself over the phone that I'm happy to go for it (there's no shop in said village, and I'm already irked by Himself's insistence that all our current supplies come from the nasty blue supermarket, which I find absolutely appalling for quality - I'm not going to start paying them to dump things I don't like at the doorstep if I can buy things I actually want).

It'll mean I've got 12 months to get myself as functionally fit and strong as possible. Suppose I'd better get my backside into the gym - horses, canoes, boats and suchlike need as much strength and as little weight as possible, and I've definitely a need to shift a fair amount of ballast.

Might be handy for wearing a floofy white dress, too. If he asks me properly this time round, that is.

  • West bank of the Tamar? The opposite side from my original home, some way north of the city, on the western edge of the Moor. Beautiful country, lovely people; my father's family nearly all lived on the western side or "further down" towards Truro. I'd jump at it, Jojo... but now all my family live "up here"!

Cleared out & cleaned one of my "Armageddon cupboards" yesterday & today. I'm ashamed to say that there will be a bin-bag of out-of-date stuff heading to the Tip; TBH I'd happily use most of it up as not much is far OoD, but it's all stuff that no-one who lives here full-time now actually likes! Plus there'd been a small visitor in there, now fortunately deceased thanks to the kittens, so any packets of dried stuff that are in the least bit suspect are going out too. I think I can use the space better, some of it to house the current round of preserves - raspberry & quince jelly under construction right now.
