Lyn I have my mother's copy of the Reader's Digest Gardening Year which tells you when to plant (and what should do well, too, if I remember rightly), but it's from the early 1970s and I wonder if planting times will have changed a bit now, due to climate change.
I used to have her copy of The Cookery Year too, but can't find it. I think it must be somewhere in the loft0 -
I think we're able to grow things now that are slightly 'exotic' because of climate temperature increase, Dd1 got perfect ripe melons from her greenhouse this year and I know people in Hampshire who ripened aubergines outside this year too. The earth certainly has been warm for planting earlier in the season over the past few years which has meant being able to plant earlier too.0

Online order shaved down to just above the minimum spend for delivery. This meant keeping it to ingredients/things that can be frozen.
With the cost of keeping Himself mobile and fed in Devon on just my miserable wage, it's going to take months to dig myself back out of this financial hole, as it's knocked out my buffer, my usual budget and is now making deep inroads into my available credit.
But I shall have access to bread, oats without added protein and various meat and vegetable items in the meantime.
Going to have to have a serious conversation with Himself when I see him. This is not sustainable.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Morning all.
Re comments derived from the mainstream meeja, I read them and might well have commented on the volcano story if Lyn hadn't beaten me to it.
I read widely from several news sources online, including cruising the daily fail website. I rarely read more than the headlines but occasionally they have some interesting stuff, mainly stuff half-inched from more reputable sources. Howsomever, news is news, as long as one retains a healthy degree of scepticism, I feel.
Wasn't online yestereve as was on the allotments. Digging around and then there was a late delivery of grains so I was deploying my new 4 wheeled garden barrow (:heart2:) for the first time for the purpose for which I bought it.
I ran out of daylight before I ran out of grains and was putting my toys away in the shed at 8 pm when it was fully dark. The small torch in my handbag was pretty handy, I can tell you.
I am now going out again, to do some more graining before coming back to shower and get ready for the day job. Laters, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Not you either Thrifty just a general popping of 'bubbles' and it's been several times so I just wondered if NOT posting when things pop in like possible volcanic eruptions or bad weather or extreme rainfall but waiting to see if they actually happen might be preferable. I only pop on things I read, not necessarily because I believe them or because they'll affect me but because this is a 'PREPPING' thread and part of prepping is being aware of possibilities happening and being able to plan ahead of them where at all possible. IF it's consensus of opinion that you'd rather NOT know then I'm happy not to flag things up, it's no problem to me.0

I scan the Daily Fail headlines too
there were two minimally useful ones this morning, for instance - one about cleaning babychange platforms in public areas, very very well, because addicts use them for preparing their drugs, and the other (more a battle in the ongoing war) about banks avoiding their responsibilities on the "push" scams. Once a month or so, they also have really good first aid articles, quite long, written by reputable peeps, and as GQ says, maybe lifted from elsewhere, I've never checked on those.

We have the 'turn on' first page that comes on the computer screen set to the MSN newsfeed so I get an ever changing set of articles through the day, I read anything that pops on from whatever source if it looks interesting or if it might impact lives in any way. I don't not read if it's from the mail or the Mirror if it looks like it might be pertinent but I'd not read 'drivel' from the Times or the Telegraph either. It's a useful way of keeping a finger on the pulse of the world.0

No, please don't stop posting heads-ups! Basically they do no harm, and may do someone out there some good; it's up to us not to panic but to check sources & weigh the evidence for ourselves. I do miss 2T's & Kittie's weather reports too; the worst rarely came to pass but I was able to secure my chicken shed roof etc. before potential trouble became actual trouble. Which is pretty much the essence of prepping, isn't it?Angie - GC Aug25: £374.16/£550 : 2025 Fashion on the Ration Challenge: 26/68: (Money's just a substitute for time & talent...)0

and Icelandic weather really affects Scotland.
Karmacat, I have a great system for gardening... If there's a space then I plant something innit.0
