I don't like covering beds with carpet or tarps or whatever, it just generates more work for me. Is easier to rake or fork or even run the mower over the weeds lol. Lazy gardening!
See this morning's National has a report that the UK guv have quietly appointed a Minister for Food, in case of rationing...
Rona Mackay told the Holyrood chamber the UK Government has “quietly appointed a minister for the protection of food supplies – the first time this has happened since World War Two”.
Getting more interesting by the day innit0 -
Quick google on that front - ie re Minister appointed for food supplies.
Neither the Guardian or The Independent newspapers use the phrase "first time since World War 2" - so not sure where that phrase comes from, with its connotations of rationing.
I would see the appointment of someone like this as just commonsense and not "back to the 1940s" - ie someone to oversee where we get our food from/what we have to pay for it/etc - but certainly not to oversee rationing.
So I'm not planning on worrying about that possibility - even if I hadnt made one of the first things I did on buying my current house to plant fruit trees and bushes (so that they would have time to mature "in case") - as most of them have now done.0 -
And the Grauniad was mentioning how horrified the EU folks were at Jeremy's insistence on Brexit terms being exactly the same trade conditions as now - to force an election in the UK, but still ... hard Brexit chances just went up, methinks.2023: the year I get to buy a car0

Well money, feel free to ignore it and don't prep - we all have free will!
And yes it is the first and only time since Lord Woolton in WW2 that we have had a minister for food.0 -
Karmacat, whatever happened to working for the good of the country? They are all hell bent on working for their own personal interests! So we have to prep for ours as well0

Hi guys
Common sense would say that a minister for food would work with our farmers to supply what is needed rather than what makes the most profit and to make the supermarkets to pay enough for such farmers to survive.
But I did say common sense so I doubt that will be the end result.

I know there was a discussion further up in the thread about stories from the media - and I'm sorry, I really am - but in this case I really think I have to point out that there is no 'Minister for Food' in Westmonster...
David Rutley (MP) has been appointed as Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Food and Animal Welfare in DEFRA.
This is just one of several junior ministerial posts with responsibilities for providing briefing to Cabinet on areas of EU exit readiness.
His responsibilities are analysis and monitoring of the UK food chain - with the lead for 'food and drink industrial strategy, animal welfare, forestry and climate change adaptation.'
No mention of rationing, no actual authority to determine policy or to control who holds what stocks from where or at what price.
It makes a good headline, but in reality not the portent of doom some tabloids are making out...That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

It really is only common sense to be aware that things are going to change in March, a stab in the dark is all we can make at how! I shall be restocking my store cupboard with the makings of main meals and oats etc. and tea, rice, coffee, herbs, spices because that will give us variety if some items of food become less available or too expensive to afford when we finally DO see how the land lies after Brexit. I hope that things are still available, I hope that we can still afford them too but one thing I've learned over the years is that hope isn't always reality and being prepared in any way is so much better than not being prepared. Those who see no point in making any preparations at all MAY have the right of it but on the other hand they may NOT!0

Newshadow, thank you so much for pointing out that a Minister for Food is actually an Undersecretary for Food. That will make such a difference ... :rotfl::rotfl:0

I've just had a read of the article about the appointment of the new minister for food and am sick to death of reading that we're all dependent on the 'Just in Time' supply chain that all the supermarkets use. The sensible solution to that would be to go back to the supply system that we had years ago when we knew that other than weather events the food was in the shops seasonally and there were always basics like tea, flour, bacon available. Why should the supermarkets hold us in chains any longer? they need to change their supply methods if they want to keep us as customers!0
