  • Slightly bemused this morning watching coverage of the G6+1 on the news by the vigour with Comrade (sorry Potus) Trump is pushing for Russia to be reinstated to make it the G7+1 which, when the blame for trade wars is being put fair and square on the rest of the world who treat the USA unfairly apparently making me wonder if the USA's actions on tariffs is being seen as righting a long standing wrong. This action in the light of just how fiercely he has denied any 'Russia' involvement in his, his childrens, his staff, senators and all his aquaintance's lives let alone getting him elected seems to be crazy? Am I alone in thinking that a possible future title for the USA might be the USSA?

Mrs LW I think you are being Far Too Kind to El Cheeto.
I think it little less than a tragedy that a G7 meeting hosted by Canada (that most courteous & civil of countries), should find itself facing a meeting without a closing agreement.

I shall immerse myself in the pomp & pageantry that is trooping the colour & pretend the politicians are irrelevant for a while. Then go inspect my fruit bush cuttings.

Although I'm pretty much stuck on the sofa, prepping up here is ongoing in the form of frugal cooking ideas and menu plans. Have also got one's gardener (aka the RV) planting bags and tubs of tatties, leeks and onions. Next on list is finding the best place for bigger sized bags of broth mix or lentils, and powdered milk.

mardatha, the *big* bags of lentils & the powdered milk are both Indian staples (says she generalising wildly, but to steer you towards the right stores).

Use google to help you locate both stores and streetview to give you a bit more confidence - I have been a bit startled to be the only white & uncovered woman in the building - so the next time I took a son with me & felt a lot less obtrusive. If you don't play by some cultural norms, your risk being told the higher prices, but many have clear price tags anyway. It currently being Ramadan, you may see more sorts of dates held out for sale than you would have thought possible, but there are also discounts on rice, oil and other staples - I really should haul a son off on another trip before Eid (Weds 13 or so this year).

Being an untrusting sort, I paid cash & the price for a sack of basamati, a sack of onions & a box of mangoes dropped still further.

I've got a can of Nestle's Nido powdered milk - interestingly, the D of E crowd seem to require it for expedition catering, and I've steered several baffled D of E/Scout parents to the right corner of the supermarket. I probably ought to be telling their children, but somehow the shopping list ends up in the parents' hands... My can has a two year shelf life, but since I haven't yet opened it, I reckon it's probably still adequate.

I'm fortunate in that the Muslim population around Lancashire is such that the major supermarkets recognise a market segment & cater to it. Not certain how much fiscal influence they have in Scotland?!

I'd have to go up to Edinburgh for that then. Son used to live opposite an Asian supermarket there and lots of folk from the street used to go in, we're a very friendly bunch up here :D Next door to that shop was a fabulous Sicilian bakers........ I got very friendly with them ;)
  • For those FMs who don't have a B&M/Home Bargains within easy reach, Aldi are currently selling our favourite single burner camping stove.

On a different subject, I've just bought an Arctic Air, Personal space cooler, from Asda.

I'm slightly shocked to read that DfV felt it necessary to have her son with her in the Asian shop.

I hope that is due to worry about wandering hands rather than feeling it necessary to comply with Sharia law.

FTA: (Though neither concern is very desirable in 21st century Britain.)

Not necessary, just a convenience & courtesy. (Besides which, lugging sacks of foodstuffs around is a job I prefer to delegate, and observing, I wasn't the only woman who felt that way!) Sorry if it sounded otherwise!

Wandering hands are not something I farm out to a son - I have hairpins...

Usually I take sons as pack animals. Who may have opinions on foodstuffs held out for sale (mango lassi, pomegranates, fresh dates & figs & haram haribo come to mind) but are otherwise there to observe, learn & lug. Scouts can take them into parts of mosques etc I can't, but it's all part of living & canny shopping in MSE 21st century Britain.
  • I was ironing this morning and listening to The Big Question on the TV and the discussion was whether the 'liberal ideals and conventions' that have been the civilised and accepted norm in the west for the past 70 odd years are now done and finished and that perhaps the ideas of Mr.Trump and others who seek to set the world into disarray and only see things in relation to how it affects their nations will be the norm? what a difficult world that will be if it's truly the case how on earth will any nation be able to trust its neighbours and even those perceived to be allies if they are to be treated the way the USA is currently behaving towards the rest of the world including it's allies! I feel perhaps those 'interesting times' are beginning to be a reality in our time! not good!!!
