I need to prep an 'emergency' kit for a wedding day, so ideas please. Plasters, sewing kit, energy bars.........
If it's any help to know, I was a wedding snapper in a previous existence and used to always have in the bag ...
small mirror
a few wet wipes in a placcy bag
a few short lengths of gaffer tape stuck to a bit of plastic sheet
tit tape
string
paracetamols
antihistamine cream (stings and bug bites)
pen and paper
waiter's friend
Swiss army knife
safety pins
There was more but I can't think what just now. And yes, every one of those items came in handy at least onceWe're all doomed0 -
Thanks all. Good job I've bought a largish clutch bag then!Spend less now, work less later.0

Sedatives (whatever works for you, but avoid chocolate which will melt explosively at the most inconvenient moment),
Sticky plasters (because you can get a paper cut on an order of service & blood drips, stains & is generally considered not the ticket at a wedding.)
Antihistamines (if you aren't carrying at least 2 types, you've not been reading the packets in the pound shop & no you cannot be allergic to them - have an unexpected reaction, yes, but not be allergic.)
Soluble aspirin 300mgs (one to be crunched by the heart attack victim and duly recorded as you await the ambulance)
Tub of bubble mixture to distract children (& get some glorious candids)
Polo mints full sugar (can be used on children & horses)
Cheap blister plasters
Those odd butterflies of sticky leather you use to stop shoes ripping your Achilles (and stockings)
Emergency foil blanket (doubles as reflector)
Slightly larger clutch bag?
Also - know where the Big first aid kit is & have a spare key to get to it.
Know where the nearest defib is - the "How To Use" is open-&-listen-&-follow-the-instructions but for Pete's sake call an ambulance first.
Know where all the loos are, and the accessible ones. (So long as you know, it won't be an issue, but if you do, then you are remembered fondly as That Wonderful Soul who knew exactly, and if you don't as So Unhelpful. Life is most unfair but I cannot prove Death is any better.)
Run an eye around the church & reception area - I'll presume both are adequately served by road, but if you had to get a helicopter in, then where & what are you going to cut & tie as a windsock/ wind indicators?
Have local cab company phone numbers in your phone. If anything starts getting absolutely not the article, you need to be able to get yourself out stat & hot-wiring someone else's wheels is not recommended. Quietly being removed from a junction out of line of sight in an unrecognised car - priceless.
Have a wonderful day!0 -
Did anyone see this story today?: https://news.sky.com/story/second-world-war-bank-notes-worth-1m-found-under-brighton-shop-floor-11398441
Hmm. They are said to have been horded against the threat of Nazi invasion. (Who are bound to recognise Bank of England notes?) Certainly wouldn't be much use to make an escape abroad with if BoE was under new management!
Plus, they will even now only be worth the face value, assuming you can get the BoE to accept them.
Were sovereigns not available during the war?0 -
BTW, anyone like me with a delicate tummy, might want to carry a Gaviscon hand pack. Belly aches are the worst.0

Were sovereigns not available during the war?Nope.
There is a large hiatus of sovereigns in the early-mid 20th century and there were almost none produced between 1931-32 and 1957, when full production resumed at the Royal Mint.
Our Royal Mint stopped producing sovereigns in 1917 (although they did make some in 1925) but the colonial mints were making them under license, as it were. They were made in Bombay India, Ottawa Canada, Sydney Australia and in Pretoria, South Africa.
At the start of WW1, people started hoarding sovereigns and half-sovereigns and they could no longer function as currency because people were too scared to spend them! So the £1 note got invented in a mad hurry one weekend, and was initially printed on stamp paper.
The collapse of the Credit-Anslatt Bank in Austria in 1931 caused a financial crisis and the price of gold went up. Short version is, the gold content of the coin (8g of 22 ct) was worth more than the notational value.
The Royal Mint did make a 1937 proof set of gold coins which contained a sovereign, and the set ballparks at £10k because it is scarce. They have changed hands above that, but the market has cooled recently due to the Japanese not buying them anymore (I earwig in some interesting circles, in case you're wondering).;)
There were a few sovs made in 1949, 1951 and 1952 but these were struck with the 1925 date on, which must have really annoyed collectors.
Sovs were the store of value and good for settlement of bills both during and after WW2, in Europe and other parts of the world, so much so that it became worth forging them. Even forging them with the correct weight of gold, they were selling at such a premium. So, Royal Mint decided to resume production properly in 1957.
Sooo, if you ever get offered sovs with certain dates, you can easily tell if they're fake.If the economy goes pear-shaped, gold will be hidden up or trade at ridiculous premiums.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Lest it come in handy, in a somewhat bizarre set of circumstances, mint marks can be seen above the date, on the ground below the horse's hoof.
(Dear me, the things we pick up & recall from ripping yarns of youth - largely Gavin Lyall & his pilots' handy reference info! Mind, I impressed the socks off a colleague knowing what a diamantaire was [thanks to a D!ck Francis novel] then pulling a list of actives off Wikipedia.)
As well as mint marks being on the St George and the dragon type, some older sovereigns have them either below the wreath and the shield or below Victoria's bust.
Should you happen to run into any, or be offered any sovs. Rough diamonds are the devils own job to assay so you may prefer to source ready cut rocks.0 -
Sovs have the letters BP (Benedetto Pistrucci - the engraver) on them - to the right of the date. On true sovs, these letters are clear and sharp, but so small you really need a magnifying glass to see them. Or you do if you're as bat-eyed as I am.
Fakers can't get the clarity and the BP usually is blob-blob. If you see any blobiness, beware........... :rotfl:Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.
