Do all older people have to have one of these things?

Firstly, I resent being described as an older person.

Secondly, no, not everyone has to have one, but if symptoms indicate a possible problem, then it's a good idea to have one.

Polyps can, if not removed, become nasty, and around 25% of people over 50 will have at least one.
Second question - how can I avoid one :D

Nobody can make you have one, but, if what you mean is, what can I do to avoid the need for one?, then I don't think there is anything you can do.
  • It's the end of the financial year at the end of March, I know councils use up surplus finances on roads etc. to ensure they get the same amount of money allocated in the next year, perhaps they have an excess of leftover colonoscopies? and are giving them to older folks to ensure they have enough next year? Perhaps there is a list of names.................I hope I never find out!!!!!

Bob I'm 38. There's the distinct possibility that you're an older person. I spend my online days chatting to older people on OS and don't mean any offence. There's no need for resentment.

not me, never, no need with my healthy ways and knowledge and my dh never went, he had hospitalised ulcerative colitis in his late 20s which I eventually zapped over time, never to return. He had a letter and cancelled the invasive procedure years later. Never looked back. Each to their own

Woah now hold on. Back up a bit if you don't mind and try to educate me. Do all older people have to have one of these things? Second question - how can I avoid one :D

They tell me we learn summat new every day. I tell them that I could have done without learning about this.

Older person speaking (I am 64). Over the age of 60, everyone in England is invited to take part in a screening programme which involves sending samples for analysis. It isn't very pleasant, but no big deal either. If anything worrying is found in these samples (this is rare), one would be invited to undergo further investigations to (hopefully) rule out bowel cancer. These may involve a colonoscopy. Most times these further investigations will not reveal cancer, but in some cases may indicate less serious conditions that require much less drastic treatment.

If younger people (anyone under 60) have worrying symptoms and go to their GP, they would undergo the same kind of investigations. A healthy diet / lifestyle helps to guard against bowel cancer, but there is also an element of luck / genetics involved, as with any other cancer.

Hope you feel better soon Bob :(

Thank you DawnW. I was wondering if it was a screening programme. I thought the actual colonoscopy might be the screening programme and was horrified. But now I know what it is that is being screened, if my sample indicated bowl cancer I would have the colonoscopy without a shadow of a doubt.

    Thanks for explaining. :)
  • Shuddering at thought - having had one of them described to me by a young male work colleague years ago. Definitely didnt like the sound of it and thought "If that's what a young/otherwise fit man is saying about it = not for me personally then".

Each to their own - but...no thanks....I'd much sooner change to a super/super/super healthy diet with never a let-off moment for anything else personally.

I did have one of those New Age colonic irrigation things some years back and thought "Not doing that again", read about possible dangers of it, and doubled the "Not doing that again" thinking...
