    Hi All,

I'm probably asking on the wrong thread but here goes anyway...

Have any of you Nationwide flex-account holders used a cash point this afternoon? I tried and was told my card was faulty... as were 3 of the next 5 customers (all Nationwide accounts...the successful customers were using other bank cards). I don't want to waste my time trying other cash points if there is a national problem!

    Thanks in advance,

    Alice

I only ever browse on this thread, (I have posted before about making a will) but from what I understand of it, this is very relevant. :)

Why are cards always mysteriously faulty just after payday? :)
  • Anyone got a stock of tealights, but worried about the open flame, when using them?

Quite cheaply made (made from thin steel plate and rectangles of thin glass), but OK for power cuts.

Thank you Ivyleaf, Linda32 and Jko... problem solved! The lovely man on the Nationwide phone checked my account details etc and said there wasn't a problem as far as he knew and said I should be fine at any other ATM, which turned out to be true :-)

And yes, typical straight after payday!

Enjoy the rest of the weekend, I know that I will now!

GQ I enjoyed learning about council taxes immensely! Thank you for your wonderful information.
In the US we do not charge renters just home owners and it is called property tax. If you do not pay this taxes within a certain amount of time your property will have fines and then after (usually) two years a lien will be placed on that property. After that it can go into foreclosure and be sold. Many states have the same apparatus of garnishing your wages for these taxes before they would foreclose. If you have a mortgage the mortgage company will usually pay that year's overdue taxes and immediately demand payment from the owner. If this is not received then foreclosure is started by the mortgage company.

My FIL used to stand on the courthouse steps and bid on these properties as they were being auctioned off. He always bid on land and so we have have inherited strange little tracts of land that are dotted around the county. They are between 1-100 acres but as we live in a dry arid area they aren't really worth anything. We did make some money when the electric company wanted to place a pole on one of the properties. Now we are being approached by an oil company to pool a 10 acre plot into the 360 acre pooling area to drill a well. We have the mineral rights in conjunction with OH's nephews and would get a very small percentage. We won't get rich but even $50 a month would be great. Of course, so far nothing has been drilled and oil prices are below what is needed for a new well to be drilled so it's pie in the sky.
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

:) Thanks for clarifying the differences, mila, I read US websites and blogs but each culture has its differences which the natives understand and which are hard going for outsiders.

Was talking to a pal this morning who was complaining that he has lousy mobile reception on his farm and I suggested that he ought to try pitching his land as a site of a mobile phone mast; better signal and some moolah, what's not to like? You gotta think laterally.

We were discussing land (he has about 700 acres, this is pretty respectable farm in southern England). And a wood. With the rides disappearing under rampant grass/ brambles/ nettles. I have a path which is just under a yard wide and 33 yards long. I have the exact same problems, only in miniature. Except he's got a tractor with a grass-cutter, dammit, so jealous.:rotfl:

I have a pair of grass-cutting shears and I'm not afraid to use them.

  • FYI milasavesmoney, a "mobile" is what you would call a Cell Phone.

:) Oh yeah, didn't think of that. We'd understand what you meant if you said cell phone but we don't use it, they're just mobiles here.

All UK mobile numbers have 11 digits and the first two are always 07. Random fact of the evening for you to impress strangers with in NM. Landline phones have area codes starting with 0 also. If calling UK numbers from abroad, you substitute 44 for the 0.

Working, as I do, in a call centre, I recognise all the local area codes when they pop up on screen as we take the calls. Sometimes, we even get called by fancy people in Lunnon Town on their 0207 and 0208 numbers. I allus make sure I speak proper cuz I dunt wunt them to fink I wuz sum kind of yokel jus' cuz I live in Da Sticks.*

    * The Sticks are south of Watford. Someone can tell mila about Watford and why the north-south divide runs there. It's not exactly the Mason-Dixon line but it has a certain amusement factor.
