When I was small,we had one outdoor loo shared by 4 families.

You wouldn't want to use it, right after your neighbour, who was out on the Guinness the night before. :D

Just wondering if everyone has a fire extinguisher? I think mine is out of date and I need to have it checked at the local fire department.

    :) Morning all.

    This is interesting: http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2016-07-28/worlds-made-hand-survival-fittest-will-replace-checking-facebook

I see some analogies with the present situation vis-a-vis staggering infrastructure here in the UK.What do others notice in their neck of the woods?

Interesting article. Imo the entire structure is built on a house of cards and I can only see one direction of travel. At some point the re-set button will have to be pushed. I think rural communities will come off best. We have land and food and territorial farmers with firearms who won't be shy of using them. My new motto is 'Hug a farmer today'! :)

Down here, the most visible signs of decay are the roads. It's peak holiday season, more people are "staycationing" down here than has happened for many years (many of them in massive caravans they have little idea how to manoeuvre with, or old ones with bits dropping off en route) and half our roads are closed for long-overdue repairs! One main route into & out of the older part of the conurbation - with the port, carrying a fair amount of cross-Channel ferry & commercial trade - is shut until late November, and the resulting chaos is spilling right out here. I've just done a massive stock-up of non-perishables because basically, we're thinking of ourselves as trapped here until September! North & west routes aren't too horrendous, so I can get to vital things like flour and chickenfeed, but we can forget clothes shopping, shoes etc. for now and OH is setting off for work down there at 6 a.m., for a 10 minute journey!

Another thing; we've always been a part of the country that doesn't get much funding from central government, but it's much more noticeable now. If you have a child or young person with special needs, for example, there is basically next to no help available. Our neighbours have an 10 y.o. autistic son, and this summer there's no respite available at all because there's no money in the kitty. Until you've lived with a child that really doesn't sleep and may randomly decide to turn all the taps full on at 3 a.m. with plugs in, re-wire the TV, or take a hammer to the dog, you have no idea how desperate you can get just for a night's unbroken sleep. So they take it in turns to go off in their very-dilapidated little old camper van & hope for a quiet night in a campsite whilst the other parent stays on guard.

Then there's the 3-week wait to see a doctor... but that's pretty universal now!

My god I'm going to stop moaning about my doctors, I can get an emergency appt any day I need one and a routine appt within 2-3 days.
Funny GQ I was just reading that article :)
Re compost toilets/outside loos I don't see anything awful or horrible at all about them.

Oh thriftwizard, that sounds "fun" :(
We're lucky enough not to need social care atm, but I know you can now only get any help if your needs are deemed serious rather than "only" moderate.
Lots of potholes here too, though the council are doing their best to get them filled in.
Grass on verges and roundabouts etc are now contracted to be cut only a couple of times a year, but residents aren't allowed to e.g. mow verges outside their homes because of h & s!

    Transport. Or lack of it.
The bus service to my mother's village stops at 5.30 in the evenings. There is no service at all on Sundays. This is a largish village, the smaller ones have nothing and so cars are used more on the narrow country lanes.

The name Beeching is still mud in these parts :rotfl:

    Holes. No lack of them!
And I don't mean potholes. There is a hole in a side road near us that has barriers and cones around it. It's been there for at least 4 months.

A lot of services seem to be being run by volunteers e.g. activities at the library for children
People are already starting to do things for themselves because services like these have been withdrawn due to lack of funding.

However, I can see a shortage in the volunteer sector happening due to the raising of pension age for women, which I agree with, but it does have a knock on effect.
Lack of volunteers = more services withdrawn :(

Then there's the return of multi-generational living (in itself not a bad thing, I feel, if there is space) due to the lack of council or affordable housing.......... I could go on :(
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p

Just on a trivial note, don't know if this is a sign of the times or not - or maybe my rural town is just a chav place, but the local store started missing shopping baskets when the carrier bag charge was intoduced. There is a polite notice up asking anyone who has accidentally taken home a basket to return it. Who the f 'accidentally' takes home a supermarket basket? :rotfl:
