:) I've read that the 6-8 weeks refers to the build-up of maximum immunity, too. But that this is less applicable to the elderly.

I'm having my shot in the 3rd week of October, not because of a cunning plan, but because of not being able to get onto an earlier clinic.

My consultant explained that a flu shot doesn't guarantee I wouldn't get the flu, but it would make it less severe than it would have otherwise have been. The consequences of my getting flu were described by the same specialist as 'very serious indeed'.

I didn't like to ask whether that meant probable hospitalisation or whether I should start planning my funeral. Which, as a prepper, has been done already (instruction is cheap cremation with no ceremony and no religious types within a country mile).:rotfl:

OH and I had our flu jabs yesterday. He explained that it's difficult for him to stand in a long queue at the clinic, and the receptionist arranged for the nurse to do ours separately.

We get a joint appt with the nurse and just go in and out again, having ours on Fri morning at some ungodly hour. I'll be comatose until I get back up that road and get a gallon of tea.

Please don't assume that jabs will be available as and when you want it because it isn't even there for when you need it. Stocks aren't never ending and when your source is out of stock there is a real risk of it not coming back again until the next autumnal season.

I will be at the front of the queue each and every time now because I've learned, unfortunately, that surgeries are also involved in supply and demand and making money opportunities. We're dealing with pharmaceutical companies and suppliers. We're taking about bulk buying and bulk payments unfortunately. I've been on the wrong side of this issue for 9 months.

If you feel you can benefit from the top up treatment of a jab then go for it as soon as possible, is my advice.

Going back to preps, I've got a bigger order than usual coming Sunday from sainsbugs. Half doz of each of these :
    UHT milk
chicken noodle soup (pkts of dried)
    chicken soup mix
    veg soup mix
    mushroom soup mix
    mashed potato
    instant porridge
    all day breakfast
    semolina (for me!)
    spam (for him!)
tins mixed veg (basics, for soup & stews)
tins carrots (basics for lentil soup)
    microwave sponge puds
    custard (basics for me)
    tinned potatoes
    small wholemeal loaves
    Fray Bentos pies x 3
    porridge oats x 3
    Splenda x 3
I buy other things like teabags, cat food, cat litter & meat, in bulk from Costco
Next week I'll cover the soap/toothpaste/cleaning gunk. But it's making me feel a lot happier, nothing worse than running out of one thing that you really can't manage without on a cold or snowy or wet day in midwinter. ;)
  • Saw this article and beamed - I'm usually in a good mood for jabs as I fondly recall the poster of a cute little lad beaming with the strapline "stop him getting the girl next door into trouble - get the measles jab". Then I read we've pretty much stopped measles in the UK & just thank the Kindly Ones - as I recall loosing several folk from school. They went either to the cemetery or the school for the deaf - and my infant mind didn't discriminate terribly hard between those - either way, families were devastated.

Mard I like that shopping list - have you added the prosecco promo in?! Well if you're going to spend over £30 in Sainb you may as well lay in in the festive fizz as well?!

I have bought Lucozade - and was a tad peeved to find Asda was cheaper than both B&M & Lidl this week, but I've now got enough to ensure the lads don't come down with a bug soon!

Going to Asda tomorrow morning to get the jab at £5, DH is booked in for the jab at the surgery Saturday week. Must get DD1 to check if her employer provides free jabs otherwise I'll book her in as well.

DD2 is back to uni to start her masters at the weekend so no time to get her done but I'll nag her to check what the position is re jabs for students and she'll ignore me as usual
It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!

They'd have to pay me to drink Prosecco, it's disgusting stuff!

:p It's just pallid Irn Bru for grown-up, Mardatha. I quite like the stuff.

    I prefer G & T, tho.

Just come back from a short break in France. We had a night in Champagne but it was the Eastern part of Champagne where they grow potatoes rather than vines. We were let into a bit of local knowledge. Round there they drink Cremant D'Alsace at a third of the price. We had some and I really liked it. It's much drier and less sweet than Prosecco. You need to go for a medium price one otherwise it's a bit gassy but it's a good alternative
