Merry festive mayhem here in peaceful old Dorset this morning; a large WW2 bomb has been discovered in a quarry not too far from here. They're going to blow it up at 10am, and in the meantime, a local school is shut, and all businesses & inhabitants within a kilometer have been evacuated. We're not affected, & probably won't even hear the blast (though we do sometimes hear quarrying & ordnance blasts from much further away, if the wind's in the right direction) but it goes to show, the unexpected can happen almost anywhere...
This little rural corner of Cumbria is the noisiest place I have lived in. If all the heavy farm traffic, tractors, milk wagons, feed wagons, cattle trucks etc etc is not enough, just when you think it is safe to have a quiet moment in the garden, you get training jets screaming overhead from a military base a few miles away. We get gunfire and night flares too . There could be a wholescale invasion and we would just think it is business as usual.

I get my olive oil from the Indian/World Food section of supermarkets - especially with festivals like Ramadan & Diwali, you can get brilliant discounts.
What I didn't factor in when I moved here was how mich more expensive food would be. I do miss having effnic stores within reasonable distance. I never thought of olive oil but you could pick up spices at a fraction of the price of those silly little supermarket jars. Rice and speciality flours were a lot cheaper too.

Just how deep into Bronte country are you that Bradford is such a hike? Mind, we live so far from work & family that our 'reasonable distance' is under a half hour drive.

I should keep a bit of skipping rope in the car for when the balloon goes up.

:) I'm going to be stocking up on olive oil, too, as I use it every day on my salads. Will see about that any day now. Have also stocked up on tea. And an extra three crystal deodorants, have been using the product since January, am satisfied with its performance, it's shelf-stable and only likely to go up in price.

Two are for the stocks and one is to be kept over at the parental home, so I don't have to cart it about for visits there.

Also stocking up on olive oil.

Glad you are getting on with the crystal deodorant. I use it pretty well all the time, I should think four would be damn nearly a lifetime supply, they last years.

    Unless you drop them

    Ask me how I know....:p

Can't recall if I've asked you before - but do you have a wholefood shop nearby? They also have large jars of spices - I bought a generous packet of some chilli flakes from mine the other day for 48p.

Re speciality flours - not a problem here. I could manage to buy them here - though with a bit more effort (ie a bus trip). But my Vitamix deals with that anyway. If I want chickpea flour I just grind chickpeas. Rice flour means just grinding rice and so on. I think that a good proportion of my recipes for anything much these days just have "blitz" down as one of the instructions and into the Vitamix it goes at that point...
  • For those of you with a Waitrose nearby, they have double packs of Lavazza with 50% free, so £5.70 for 3 packs.
It's also an item you can have as one of your picks with a mywaitrose card, which gives 20% off, so, £4.56 for 3packs - well worth stocking up on!
(Apologies to those with no Waitrose!)

I had a friend whose hubby worked in bomb disposal/diving/demo for one of the forces. They got called out for what people suspected was an old WW2 sea mine washed ashore. Turned out to be an old rusted empty tin surrounded by various jetson and debris, but not to disappoint the crowd they decided to stick a tiny detonator on it and blow it up anyway lol. Got to be a bit crazy to that job ;)

On the subject of internet dates, I was due to have one today. Stupid girl couldn't get a phone reply from me at midday while I was in the bath preparing for the date, and sent me a text to cancel.

!!!!!!! Never mind I'm due to meet someone else on Saturday.
