Someone on Zerohedge commenting on the Indian cash situation mentioned that he is going to change his $50 bills for $10's. I'm seriously considering changing my £20 notes for the new £5 bus ticket ones. Also, presumably as they're plastic, they won't come to any harm in a damp atmosphere?

    Anyone else thinking the same?

:) Dunno, jk0, I guess it depends on how many £20 you're holding. I think going into one's bank and changing wads of twenties for wads of the new monopoly money fivers would certainly be a memorable transaction.

And it isn't preptastic to be memorable.

Or were you just going to swop a few out as you got the fivers in change?

We were in a strange town but we legged it down a service lane from the back door and offski'd to the car park and sped off. That poor lady was later sectioned, according to the snoozepaper, when her odd behavour with strangers in the shopping streets got even odder than we were experiencing.
My friend and I were chased by a mad woman in Prague. You know how when you see people in films running into a blind alley to hide, you say 'No one would ever do that'. Well we did. In fact we were down in the basement of some flats and her footsteps were getting closer when a tenant interrupted her and we managed to leg it

In related news, Sainburys have been quite open about price increases for food in the coming year.

5% against what a savings plan is offering & suddenly my grocery & store cupboard shopping may be the shrewder investment.
It might be 5% average but I think some items will go up more. I already have a stash of ground coffee as in past experience it's one of the worst affected. Need to look at olive oil next. Going to see what's on offer in cans. Plus wine maybe. But don't know whether I can trust myself to store that. Slurp...

:) I'm going to be stocking up on olive oil, too, as I use it every day on my salads. Will see about that any day now. Have also stocked up on tea. And an extra three crystal deodorants, have been using the product since January, am satisfied with its performance, it's shelf-stable and only likely to go up in price.

Two are for the stocks and one is to be kept over at the parental home, so I don't have to cart it about for visits there.

  • Merry festive mayhem here in peaceful old Dorset this morning; a large WW2 bomb has been discovered in a quarry not too far from here. They're going to blow it up at 10am, and in the meantime, a local school is shut, and all businesses & inhabitants within a kilometer have been evacuated. We're not affected, & probably won't even hear the blast (though we do sometimes hear quarrying & ordnance blasts from much further away, if the wind's in the right direction) but it goes to show, the unexpected can happen almost anywhere...

Blimey Thriftwizard, wot larks! That'll make the Christmas epistles more interesting for all involved!

I get my olive oil from the Indian/World Food section of supermarkets - especially with festivals like Ramadan & Diwali, you can get brilliant discounts.
It does not like going subzero though.

Ground coffee, eh? Hm, may have a chat with m'father about that - he pretty much can't start his brain without a morning shot & is a shrewd grasper of opportunities. When there was all the Chernobyl fuss, he got sundry radiation stats & met stats, then had a very well informed chat with the local butcher who was completely unable to sell the lamb he had - other than to m'father whose maths suggested it was entirely safe & who was ready to rent a freezer. Both sides entirely happy with the deal.
  • Your father sounds like someone I'd like to meet DigForVictory:rotfl:.

Oh, yes, as you say GQ. I will just swap them as I acquire them.
  • The Boss cheats - all that advanced education & speaking High Maths means he gets "risk" bit several days before the rest of us.

To be fair, having secured one freezerfull, he did mention it to the college chef, who obtained similar deals & then shared the info amongst the senior & junior common rooms so that the students all knew & could pass the good word home.

He also tipped off relatives who are involved in soup kitchens & the like - where his word covered the maths.

I need hardly say that the freezer was rented for a full year, so we were not shock-loaded with lamb dishes.
