To be fair, it's designed to reduce air pollution. As well as being expensive to live in London there isn't the nice clean air that you get on your mountainside!
  • We also have Mini Holland - money being spent to provide cycle lanes throughout certain London boroughs to try to persuade the inhabitants to use bicycles rather than any other form of transport. There are some controversial arguments going on in many places.

Oh yes sorry ,didn't realise it wasn't likely to be known outside the SouthEast.
Cars do pay the London congestion charge now but not all of them. Once the new zone comes in,it will be much more widely spread than the present zone, it will affect masses more drivers.
Diesel vehicles will be a new addition I think so tough luck on taxis.
    Electric vehicles are exempt.
All Motor bikes have been exempt but will have to pay in future unless they meet certain criteria or are electric.

melodramaticme ...he probably could do certain things at home but not much ,as they work with physical documents and quite large machinery.
I did it myself for a year as a sort of stand in while one of their staff was on leave and we made-over a whole room of the house for it but it wasn't ideal, you really have to be where the current tasks are and that is in their building in London.

greenbee, my clean mountain air is a white oot of heavy snow right now :):)
  • I believe the daily congestion charge is around £11.50 per day in London which is to my mind highway robbery. OK if you can ride a bike ,but not everyone can, or wants to.

I am glad I no longer work or live in the city of my birth

The talk of the royals reminds me of the book The Queen and I (by Sue Townsend IIRC) which discusses very much the same thing but in an earlier decade.

One of the funniest books I have ever read, and a great book to read if you are in need of a giggle :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:
  • The emissions charge will be in addition to the congestion charge and it is intended to cover the whole area within the North and South Circular roads, and local authorities which cross these roads will have discretion to extend it to their boundaries. So very expensive to drive into any part of Greater London, and people will do it and pay rather than use public transport, which will become more crowded and uncomfortable than ever. Something of a Catch22 situation I think.

  • Yesterday's rain made em more than thankful I'd the wet-and-snow tyres on, but I'm now thinking I should replace my wipers. As yesterday (north of Manchester) they were only just doing the job.
Sometimes prep is not just surviving but taking notes about what could be still better.

As I'll be driving three teenage boys up the M6, can anyone recommend good places to feed them near to if not on the motorway? Cheap hot bulk needed, 'cuisine' need not apply!

On a related thought, Tesco have pinhead porridge (in lidded tins) in stock & I've not cooked this sort of oat before. Any advice?

Pinhead oatmeal needs a good long soak, and a long slow cook.
