I don't see how you can connect the two.

Private slum landlords are nothing to do with government spending.

Except that the public purse will be indirectly paying those slum landlords via housing benefit in most cases.

They are at least indirectly - a lack of provision of social housing, combined with the need to pay housing benefit I would say. That's not even considering the cost of health issues directly or indirectly affected by living in less than stable and secure affordable housing.

I was down the coast working yesterday and we had heavy snow and thunder and lightening. Was in a beautiful old council building and the roof of the bay window cracked across, letting in a deluge of water!
  • Where does the money for building social housing come from?
Or not as the case may be.

Got a mahoosive bag of YS parsnips and some cooking apples from a friend. Soup making in industrial quantities on the agenda this am.:D

No snow here but always on the surrounding hills. :(
According to some sites I've been looking at, no major snow events for lower levels till January.
Just very cold - but hey, that's what happens in winter :rotfl:

  • I don't usually post but have to add twopennoth, will the expense of renovating Buck House be incurred at the same time as renovation of Westminster (Houses of Commons/ Lordes/ Big Ben etc) ? At same time as threatened hole in tax income caused by Br€x$!t? My head is reeling.

Frost and beautiful blue skies here. Thinking of those whose worries and situation don't allow them to enjoy these simple pleasures.
  • Had a bit more snow earlier today.

It is tricky isn't it? The buck house thing. The building doesn't belong to them as far as I know but can you imagine them living in a semi with soldiers standing in the front garden?? It has to be large and heavily defended. I wouldn't be the royals for all the Gold in africa.

Even if one thinks the Royal family couldnt live in a normal type house - then there is no reason why they shouldnt live in a substantial "mansion" type house. I'd guess there are quite a few of them on the market for sale at an exorbitant price (ie a few million £s) - but that's a lot less exorbitant than a refurb of the current building.

As for what would happen to current building - I can't see any reason (other than sentiment - a thing which is not applicable with our tax money) why there might not be a few takers - even for such an expensive building as that. After all - there is an Arabic royal family out there busily buying up a lot of traditional British institutions that might like to add it to their list of acquisitions:cool:

EDIT: Just ran a quick Rightmove search for houses for sale in Surrey between £5 million and £20 million (ie positively exorbitant realistically) and up came about 18,000 properties fitting the criteria. Didnt have to scale far down the list to see a very nice/manor type house/looked in good condition for £18 million. Quite a saving on renovating Buckingham Palace with our money.

:) I think they should go and live in one of their several castles. Castles are much more defensible - Buck House is appallingly insecure, intruders have been caught inside several times, including one in the queen's own bedroom, FGS.

Seems to me, that in these days of austerity (stop laughing at the back) that everyone should pull together and be prepared to tighten their belts. Windsor Castle, Balmoral Castle and Sandringham House ought to be more than sufficient for one extended family, their staff and their security personnel.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Perhaps some enterprising soul could convert Buckingham palace to flats, and let Queenie have one, and collect the ground rent? Then the lessees would have to pay the lion's share of repair costs. :)
