Hello and welcome, LFC. You have your own abbreviation so you're officially one of us now.

I am chatelaine of one of the smallest council flats in captivity so have become a past mistress of the arts of preptastic concealment of supplies.

I have most of the grub under the bed and some thngs tastefully stashes in wicker picnic hampers, which look very fetching and can hold all sorts of things. My piece de resistance is a blockboard CD/DVD cabinet with multiple sliding sections. The front parts hold sewing supplies, the semi-hidden sliding sections hold all sorts of cans and a few other bits & bobs.

All you need to do is to think outside the box. Foodstuffs do not need to be kept in the kitchen. They can be kept anywhere they are not exposed to chemicals or heat/ cold/ damp/ vermin.

Chocolate stashes should be particularly carefully hidden as human beans are especially fond of them, and they have a greater reach than mice.

Oh LFC I love it!! Thank you for the replies, we have loads of crap under the bed but one day we will have a guest bed so that will be free game! I never thought of a thin bookcase I will look into that!

Ironic that today I asked to join this board and a little while later my sister phones sobbing that she had been let go. It's a kick in the teeth and such an awful thing to happen to her, especially as she has loans under the sun everywhere and no savings/stash to help her! This has really shown me that it's a real possibility not just something that I'm scared of, so going to start reading back this tread and get ideas of what to start stashing first, even though I read before that Tea is going up in price so that's getting saved first. I'd die without a cuppa lol!

Not got snow yet WCS but forecast for later today. Currently minus 1 here.
Sainsbugs on Sunday brought me my UHT milk stash, my bottled water stash, 5 boxes of candles, and my medicine box (ok well my old ice-cream tub lol) stash. The partridge and the pear tree were out of stock.
I noticed in passing that asda had big bags of salt outside for £3, might try and get one of them for the back step.

It's very wise to prepare for what life can throw at you,my husband was made redundant 3 times in 18 months when our children were small ....fast forward 25 years and he lost his job again last November due to the oil crash.Thankfully we had well stocked freezers and cupboards and lots of advice from this board we have survived. When I do the shopping list I always check the website My Supermarket to make sure I buy from the cheapest place. Plus I make a note of prices in homebargains and B&M.It makes you feel a bit better when you know you have a good supply of food and means you can put that money towards bills.

When the children were small and we were trying to pay off the mortgage quicker and also pay extra for DH's pension I used to make lists of dishes that were very cheap to cook but that everyone liked.

Pea and ham soup (dried peas, onions, carrots and stock cube when really skint), ham hock, turkey thigh, stuffed pancakes, stuffed mushrooms, home made pizza, homity pies, potatoes bought by the large sack and kept in a dark place. I also found that you could put almost anything in a large yorkie and it would be wolfed down.

I need to get round to ordering bottled water and long life milk as well as more flour and yeast.

Currently in the process of prepping for the colder Weather now it's arriving-warmer throws on the sofas and over the duvets when needed. Candle stash has been moved down into a more accessible drawer just in case they are needed. Batteries have been checked in torches and freezer is about full.
Mil who lives locally has been told not to get rid of her old phone, we bought her one with answerphone facility but obviously they are useless in a power cut so the old basic phone that just plugs direct into the phone socket without needing electricity is useful to still have (she has a mobile but cant/won't use it)

Garden is half put to bed for the winter, just need to get the table and chairs in the shed now they have been teak oiled for last time this season. Fences had their coat of wood stain to make them last a bit longer and keep them in good order.

  • For food inventory purposes: I am not sure whether this has already been noted somewhere on here, but haven't seen it:

    http://prepandpantry.com/

It's an app for iphone or android which lets you scan your tins and packs etc. through your phone and you can list by freezer, cupboard, under the bed store, etc. I am not much of an app user myself but I might stretch to this so that once I get around to reorganising and scrutinising my stocks I can list exactly what's there. If there isn't a barcode you can create a special code and description and even put in the use by dates if you actually believe in that sort of stuff...

Thanks I will be defantly getting a stock cupboard together, I think if I buy one or two items more each week it won't take long. Sadly I live on the Isle of Man so I only have Tesco, Deals, Co-op, M&S and Shoprite (which is an expensive local store). So not much help on the shopping front lol!

What you could do LFC is to go onto amazon and scoop up some 1p cookery books on cheap nourishing food. I swear by (I often swear during cooking. It comes waaay under sawing my own leg off on my personal satisfaction scale) - wartime cookbooks. Loads of cheap soups and stews that can be done in the slow cooker, my kind of cooking. If it's possible then get a couple of chickens - their eggs are a million times better than shop bought and with 2 wee hens and a sack of tatties then you have egg & chips for months. That's real prepping :D
