It's amazing how those with a can-do attitude and willingness to 'pitch in and work' get all the luck, isn't it?

SHTF here tonight -- a HUGE spider came barrelling across the livingroom and went to ground under my couch!:eek::eek: I'm now sat in the kitchen with my jammies rolled up to my knees. I threw the cat at it but the cat went in a huff and hid under the couch and went to sleep. I can feel it lurking and watching, waiting, plotting... HELP!!
  • Morning Mar, hope you didn't spend the night on the kitchen table :)
You probably scared him to death!!!!
  • My sons are disappointed. The thunder & lightning came, we unplugged the TV, sorted out "emergency" lighting & the electricity stayed on!

However, when I offered to turn it off at the circuit breaker, they remembered the shower & we compromised - they got wash in hot water, & go to bed by candlelight, which is what I think they really wanted!

Mar, it's coming up for Horse Chestnut season - apparently as conkers shrivel they give off a gas that spiders do not like [and/or are somehow toxic to spiders]. Might your prepping include picking up any fallen conkers to fend off 8 legged visitors? Left by doors & on windowsills, they are said top keep spiders out. (Another source says a waterpistol of water & vinegar correctly aimed [bodyshot] will discourage spiders, and a third that they do not like peppermint oil - frankly I reckon handfuls of conkers are the prettiest and least invasive/inconvenient option.

No trees up here but firs DfV, no conkers. I canny sit and relax as I know it's under my couch somewhere growing bigger and waiting..... maybe the SHTF will come in the guise of me with a flamethrower after the sod.

Amusing story about conkers deterring spiders... my best friend heard this and tried it out, didn't notice any real difference until one night they could hear this quiet knocking. It was a little mouse rolling about three conkers along at once down their hallway. They'd never had mice before and actually had a cat at the time, so while it might keep spiders away, you might get other visitors instead:eek:

You can get sprays made out of horse chestnut to deter spiders. No idea whether they work.

I seem to have an invasion of flies in a couple of rooms upstairs. As they are gathered in the window frames I suspect they are cluster flies. Hopefully they will go outside.
  • Greenbee, clearly what you need to deal with those flies is - some spiders... (ducks)

  • One lonely mosquito here. (I smashed his brother :D )
Overprepare, then go with the flow.
