  • I bought car seatbelt cutters/window smasher devices for all my family's stocking stuffers. (Not Sequoia, she's only 2 yrs and doesn't drive ;):D ) It's my way of bringing a bit of safety prepping to the rest of my loved ones. These gizmos are of good quaility and were half price/free shipping! :j

How does the rest of your family view your prepping? Mine are very tolerant of my efforts but I have noticed a few eye rolls from DH from time to time. :rotfl:
Overprepare, then go with the flow.

  • Delurking to say only my DH knows of my prepping,he jokingly refers to me as a tin foil hat wearer, the kids are too young to understand, we dont see our family all that much and my friends wouldnt be interested.
We're early/mid thirties so part of generation snowflake. Most of my friends are of the opinion that the government will look after us if shtf and many refuse to watch the news as it upsets them too much. I've given up trying to talk to people about current affairs.

Oh dear. Poor things. It'll come as a bit of a shock when they find out that the government will only help itself and those of that ilk ...
    We're all doomed

Hmm - that's understandable, if you believe that the Government has been looking after you all your life, like a remote but benevolent parent. But all the evidence points the other way, and we all have to grow up sometime.

Some brown stuff on the fan here this morning, on both a local and a personal level. The main road in & out of town is underwater following last night's magnificent atmospheric firework display; they shut it this spring to sort out the drainage, but evidently the new improved drainage still couldn't cope with about 6" rain in an hour. So we're surrounded by traffic fumes and fuming motorists.

And my mother's back in hospital following an episode of pneumonia, which she just hasn't bounced back from; she's sleeping most of the time and has no strength whatsoever in her legs, so not mobile. For once they've been understanding and haven't kicked her back out in short order; as my brothers are all away, moving house or working FT that's a bit of a relief for me, if not for her! At one stage, a couple of years ago, they sent my stepfather home at 11pm in a taxi, with no notice, because they needed the bed for someone who didn't have "care" at home. That care was my mother, herself 88 and far from well at that time, and he was quite confused, with early-stage dementia and dying of asbestosis, though to be fair to them, that hadn't been diagnosed at that stage. Episodes like that should be a bit of a heads-up to your friends, worn out mum. Good to have you aboard, by the way!

So sorry to hear about your mother thriftwizard :( Glad to hear they've kept her in hospital at any rate.
  • I was all set to "wrap" Christmas things in some Mason jars, (some with handles but fitted with the proper lids) when my family protested. They felt I was taking this prepping others by stealth notion a bit far. However, the use of a plastic lidded mug you can microwave (for soup etc) is considered entirely reasonable. My point that you can't *see* the hot chocolate etc therein was shouted down.

Offhand, what *is* the shelf-life of a matchbook or should I be giving (refillable) lighters with the assorted tealights. (Prettily boxed, they look decorative. Charming braid detailing gives fingertip info as to where the lid is & within are tealight holders, tealights & matchbooks. [Or possibly now lighters.] Meet Festive Prepping By Stealth as I usually practice it.

I have a couple of these boxes just-by-chance in the house so that if suddenly the lights go out, I know exactly how close I am to a matchbook. Lighters can wander. (My young Scout offspring Prepare themselves on a somewhat ad hoc basis!)
  • Thank you, I honestly dont think anything could get through to them until something awful happens either personally or otherwise.
  • It's not just the "snowflake generation" that thinks this way.

If I put forward various scenarios to my mother, I am informed that "they" would never let that happen!
She can't tell me who the mysterious "they" are :rotfl:

DforV -I buy Yankee candles when they have a sale for Christmas presents.
And I have quite a bit of stuff round the house "just by chance";)

MrD has accepted the fact that I am a [STRIKE]pessimist[/STRIKE] one step ahead and let's me get on with it.:D
Not dim ;) .....just living in soft focus :p
