Problem with new Garmin sat nav.

When I try to update the maps for the first time it starts with about 1.5 hours to go, then this increases to 3 hrs and even 15 hrs before dropping out! Contacted Garmin support but they haven't got back, 3 days later.
Also do I need a memory card in it?

Hi, it is a Garmin DriveSmart™ 50LMT-D WE and I have downloaded the App from Garmin onto my Macbook Pro. I uninstalled the App and downloaded it again but same result.

Hi knightstyle, don't know if this will help:

Apparently there is a Plugin for Mac downloads, if I am mistaken sorry, never used a Mac.

Well we are now in France for a couple of months. I still cannot update the Garmin but that is a minor issue as it has now stopped working, it will not switch on!
Garmin are worse than useless they take several days to get back when I complain and just send a generic message not a reply to my problems.
As it is still only two weeks old I think I will reject it and buy another make.

Go for a TomTom, I personally think they are much better.

We have a Garmin. I had a similar problem (stupidly long, never-ending updates) and found a solution in a discussion group - you have to switch off all your anti-virus and firewalls whilst it is doing the update. Worked for us.

Although I'd recommend you install one.

It's reaching the stage now, where the internal memories are approaching full.

Well 4 days after contacting Garmin again and still no reply!
    Says it all.
So what does the memory card do and what fills the internal memory?
  • So what does the memory card do and what fills the internal memory?

The memory gets filled up with updates (including maps), your own entries, etc.

My own Garmin currently has 50.9MB of free space, on its internal memory, and 2.83GB of used space, on the Micro SD Card.

Without the SD Card, I'd have run out of storage space, quite some time ago.
