Im not sure what im looking for on the engine
The rocker cover is like a baking tray turned upside down and bolted to the top of the engine. Its normally what the filler cap fits into. The gasket will be all around this where it joins the engine. If its leaking it will be wet with oil on the sides of the engine.

1 litre a week? I wouldn't even trust it to drive to the supermarket in. Scrap it.

That opinion is based on your massive knowledge of all things mechanical?

If I remember correctly the black 20litre Chevron 5w30 is A5/B5 so should be fine for most Fords, if memory serves its around £35 for 20litres.

    Don't use 10w40 in it.

That's for a new / well maintained engine not for a knackered one using a litre a week!
As engines wear you need to use a thicker grade oil or else be prepared to keep topping up.

    http://passionford.com/forum/ford-focus/452624-oil-for-a-high-mileage-1-8-petrol-zetec.html

" I have a very high mileage (175k) focus that has been ran for a good few years by the previous owner on 10w40. It currently loses no/ very little oil."

My BiL used the correct 5w30 oil in his 04 1.8 petrol Mondeo and it had a fair few miles on without any oil use, I think it was 160k (sold it in 2011.

I had well over 200k in a 130 tdci Mondeo and that never used any oil.

Same for my old V50, again a diesel, which was on well over 150k when sold and used next to nothing, I never topped it up apart from after a high speed non stop trip to Scotland where I added about half a litre for the return journey, drive back more sedately and used none.

For an old car of little value use the cheapest you can find. More expensive oils potentially protect the engine from wear over thousands of miles so spending more on a valuable car may be worth it but for an older car of little value and limited lifespan there will be no benefit.

Managed to get 5 litres for 19.99 quite happy with that checked oil before I left still max. Rocket over looks oily. But I'm unsure how it should look. May wipe it down in the morning. Need to doors "expert" said it sounds like the pistons. How hum. Anxiety attack has just subsided.
