Since September I've commuted 35 minutes each way on train into Lincoln for my Masters course. With no student loans/grant for Masters courses I couldn't afford to rent in Lincoln like I did with my Bachelors.

Interesting topic. I'm 23, and have never been lucky enough to get a job close to home.. (until now.. keep reading!)

At 18/19 I worked in London, South Croydon area, M40 > M25 past heathrow, > A3, > Loads of traffic. I used to leave in the mornings at 7.15ish, and leave the office at gone 6.30pm sometimes later to let the traffic die down. I used to get home around 7.45-8pm.

Was 110 miles per day. (55 each way) I lasted 2 years somehow, luckily, it was worth it.

Second job was 26 miles away, which again has lasted 2.5 years. In the mornings it takes 1 - 1.5 hours depending on the traffic, which is so frustrating because with no traffic I've done it in about 32 minutes. You just cannot win.

Anyway, I've just accepted a job offer which is 4.8 miles from me, so it's safe to say I'm pretty excited. Will be nice to bin off the diesel too and buy myself something silly!

I know someone that commuted 3,000 miles!
Managed to get permission to work from home on a Friday. Would take a night flight ~5 hours on a Sunday night/ Monday morning, stay with relatives Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday nights and take the night flight home on Thursday evening.

Genius way of looking at it.

Don't forget OP, that if you end up in the higher rate tax band you'll need even more!

note that if you pay your increase into your pension you only pay tax on it when you draw it down.

OT: 25 miles each way. 35 - 50 mins (typically 40 min) each way. J14 of the M40 can be fun at times!

When I first left school etc it was just about 6 miles away, which I cycled.

Later on I had to go further, I had a car - typically I'd be travelling 12-25 miles to work.

At one point I was doing 50 miles each way each day. In another job I was doing 200 miles each way but driving up Mondays and back Fridays.

The trouble with driving a long way to work (your 45 miles, say) isn't the cost of the transport, it's the hassle en-route, the delays, the poor weather - and, how are you going to get there if your transport fails?

When I was going 50 miles each way each day it wasn't just the fuel cost I had to think about, it was also the vehicle servicing and replacement costs. At 100 miles/day, that's 2000 miles/month. 24,000 miles per year meant the car would need replacing every 3-4 years, so add on another £2k/year for that.

It's not worth it .... working closer to home, for less money, gives you a better lifestyle, less worries, less chance of being in an accident or held up for 3 hours due to somebody else having an accident.
  • My shop is an hours walk from my house. I walk roughly 3 and a half miles every day to and from work. Wish it was nearer or I could afford a car!

    I'm a lucky dog.
Only 20 mins walk to my office. Can't be better.

I was offered the job. They originally offered me £41,000, but I managed to negotiate an increase to £44,000. I would be grateful for any thoughts.

Also does anyone have any experience with websites like this: https://www.sharetheride.com/public/Home.aspx. It would be helpful to share commuting costs.

When I worked for Cunard as an Electrical Officer. My commute was all of 60ft in the lift, down to the engine room from my cabin on the boat deck.
I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.
