Pedal power for me! 25 mins on a road bike, 30 mins on a hybrid off road. About 7.5 miles. It's great, I'm lucky.

Doing a second morning/evening job paying minimum wage at home with zero additional commuting I could very easily earn £7.20 per hour before tax. An extra 80 miles per day might take me an extra 2 hours (assuming this is clear motorway mileage) so multiplying that out by 5 (days) and 46.4 (weeks) then I'd need to earn an extra £3,340 per year added to the £6,824 makes £10,164.
    ...

Genius way of looking at it.

Don't forget OP, that if you end up in the higher rate tax band you'll need even more!

You're lucky as i take it you otherwise enjoy cycling as a hobby / sport / exercise so its a pleasure for you.

For me, not so much ;)

I work two miles from home, it's literally one road all the way. I sometimes cycle to work. A previous job relocated and went from six miles each way to 26 miles each way which was far too much for me. I would'nt have taken the job originally if it was that distance

OP. For me I would'nt consider the new job as for such a small pay rise it does'nt come close to justifying the longer commute and time spent doing so. £2k is'nt alot esp after deductions and fuel, you'd be running at a loss

I admire the people who spent 1-2hrs commuting each way. I would'nt be able to do it myself
  • Our office relocated to just outside Guildford so now I do 45 miles each way , a lot of the journey is between J10 and J16 on the M25.
My longest 'drive' home was 5.5 hrs.
I leave home at 0630 and often don't get home till 7.45 8pm. I've done it for over 4 years now and am at breaking point.

I don't recommend it at all - get something nearer to home and enjoy a work / life balance.

My commute actually takes me about 35 minutes each way. I go country routes, lovely scenery and pretty villages but some dodgy roads at times. The country route is longer in mileage than the main route, but the main route involves sitting in traffic, so I actually get to work a lot quicker this way. I don't earn a massive salary, but I have a small, economical car so not so bad.

However, I'm looking for jobs closer to home, more for the work/life balance than anything else as I currently work quite long hours.

I used to work in London and the commute was horrendous and expensive which is why I gave it up. Good earnings but no life.

29 miles each way but as this is into central BHM, it takes forever unless I leave home at 630am, and stay in office until 6pm - making it a long day.

My furthest commute was 55 miles, but that was a hotel and I had the opportunity to stay over one or two nights a week if the hotel was not full.

Hubby does 50 miles now, but he gets to work as quickly as I do, although obviously his fuel costs are higher.

But to me, it would be about the overall package/prospects/company etc, and not just distance - I doubled my commute to take current role, and it was the best thing I ever did.

Around 35 miles was my furthest regular commute, but with traffic it was anywhere up to 5 hours in the car every day sitting in queues. Public transport would have been similar. Lasted less than a year of getting up before 5am to get to work on time & getting home at 7pm or later. Was spending £50 a week on petrol, similar on parking. Was just exhausted constantly. Could have done it when I was 20 but not now. Life is too short.

Now my current job pays me significantly less, but is less than 5 miles away from home & it makes a world of difference to my wellbeing, which is more important to me than the money. I'll never opt for a new job with a longer commute than 10 miles max again.

I commute about 11 miles to work.

Originally I used to travel by bus. It used to take me nearly 2 hours each way. Public transport in our area is not very good . I hated it so much, that I forced myself to pass driving test and get a little car. Before, I had been trying to get driving licence on and off for a few years finding stupid excuses for not doing it.

It takes me 25 minutes each way to get to/from work. Cost of petrol is the same as cost of monthly bus pass. Of course there are other cost, when you have a car, but an hour longer in bed and hour earlier at home are worth it.

I would consider longer commute (not permanently) if job prospects were promising and I could move closer to new workplace later.
