Which Focus engine are we talking about?

It's a 1.6 zetec petrol engine. Looking at the Haynes manual it states that on the 1.8 and 2.0 litre engines the timing belt has to be removed but there is no mention of having to do this on the 1.6 engine.

So why did you basically say the opposite on a different thread?

"who knows!", sounds very much like pot luck to me.

Err ops budget is £2k not £100.
And op can look for dealers rather than private sellers.
And that threads a rant about people trying to haggle silly discounts.

That thread and this are in no way comparable. I'm surprised you of all members have even tried to!

To say it's pot luck whether a £2k car will be reliable is by far one of the most stupid things I've read. There are a lot of genuine dealers out there and lots of vehicles that will suit! Even the likes of Evana Halshaws sell budget cars that well and truly fit in to ops budget.

    Here's a link op

I'd pay no attention to anybody telling you that you can't get a good car for that money.

I don't recall anyone saying that on this thread.

Where does the £100 come from? as there was no mention of buying a car for anywhere near to this amount in the thread to which I linked.

Are you honestly saying that every car bought for £2000 will be reliable? because if so, I would strongly suggest that comment is one of the most stupid things I've ever read.

I'm not saying that it's not possible to buy decent motors for £2000 and to use your own words, "there are loads of cars out there for half that which would be reliable cars" but there are also loads of cars out there for the same price or more that will be anything but reliable.

A quick search on this forum will discover loads of examples of people who have spent £2k or more and ended up with deathtraps or moneypits.

I can also link to a load of threads where brand new or near new £15k cars have turned out to be a load of rubbish! Yet doesn't mean buying a brand new car is "pot luck" does it!

I personally thought the 1.6 water pump was ran by the cambelt not the multibelt.

If I remember correctly the 1.8tddi water pump was run by the multibelt rather than the cambelt which was why I asked. I had a Tddi that had a failed impeller.

The major difference being that brand new or near new cars normally have a full warranty and even if they don't, if buying from a dealer you have more of an expectation that a nearly new car will be more durable and reliable than a £2k vehicle, and if it isn't you can invoke your consumer rights.

In your opinion, of ten cars, each 10 years old and costing £2000 and ten cars which are each 2 years old and costing £10,000, which group do you think will be the more reliable?

I have had a look at this today, I have removed all the bolts off around the pump but the pump seems to be stuck solid and won't budge at all. It looks like Haynes were right in saying this is one of the more difficult jobs to do.
