    What on earth persuaded you to lend this kind of sum without a formal written agreement, which I presume you don't have?

    Your prospects of recovering the money depend very much on the extent of proof that you lent it in the first place - bank statements showing the transfer of payments from one account to another aren't enough, as these could be construed as outright gifts.

    Unless you have something in black and white that shows clearly the purpose and intention of the payments, you'll probably have to put this unhappy episode down to experience.
  • "They"? Is there more than one of them? You really shouldn't be surprised that "they" have defaulted on the loan following the break up and I wouldn't hold your breath about getting anything back.
