I agree this is asking for problems - buyers wanting to back out of the sale, asking for different postage methods or for it to be delivered on a specific day.

Can you tell us how it works for you qsk and what you actually ask to 'verify' buyers?

I fully appreciate the negativity the call might cause. I will not ask for details - just for a "Yes/No" answer from the Paypal holder that he/she is aware of the payment. This is for her/his protection as well, if you see what I mean.

I have to say a seller ringing and asking such a question would get short shrift from me, unless there is a specific question that needs asking or answering ,there is no need whatsoever to call.
A seller calling to ask did you purchase would get stars knocked off for comms, just because im a newly registered user does not make me a scammer and a call like that would tell me thats exactly what a seller thinks of me.

Ask the buyer to return the item to you, tracked, then see if item if faulty, refund and block

I guess in the end, different sellers have different ways to fight fraud, which also depend on what items they sell. High value high risk items such as iPhones attracts different category of buyers from, say, baby clothes. For the latter, perhaps it does not matter whether the buyers are new or not. I doubt any seller would risk selling an iPhone to a new buyer without doing some kind of detective work, even though morally new buyers should not be discriminated. Better safe than regret, even though it could lead to a red dot.

    How?

If some random person rings me and asks me to confirm my paypal payment, I won't be giving any info and I'm likely to be cancelling the purchase too.

So how exactly will this help you if they tell you "yes" but then deny getting the item.

No, it won't. It is a precaution against hacked Paypal accounts leading to authorized payment claims and for that purpose only. On a few occasions I had to do this, buyers are all quite understanding. On one occasion, I was told the order was not placed by him...

As said, different sellers have different items for sale. They have different setbacks and need to find their own specific ways to fight fraud, sometimes through painful experience unfortunately.

Paypal has protection for fraud, if you follow the guidelines you will be as safe as you can. Your 'prevention' measures don't actually do anything.
