I would also wait until I had the keys. I love the first bit when you first get the keys and camp out on the floor eating fish n chips and san miguel
We exchange soon and went looking at kitchens today, I can't sleep I'm so excited but won't buy anything until it's definitely ours.:j
OMG I thought it was just me. The first night has to be a bottle of something nice and a take away. Last time we moved there was just one child and he was just a couple of months old so it was easy. We completed ( after nightmare move) in May the little one is now 13 and my daughter 10 so I was gutted this time as for the first time the kids had a vote. So instead of Chinese we ended up with Pizza!!!
Good luck with the kitchen.
We have just come to the end of a building renovation and found that you can get some real bargains. We got bases from Ikea for nothing ( well a good price) tops made to measure else where and fab handles. Taps and butler sinks in a sale online. We had to watch every penny as the building has five kitchens but the end result looks a million dollars.Happiness, Health and Wealth in that order please!:A0 -
When I moved out on my own I had the same issue and hadn't realised that sofas were made to order on a 3 month lead time. Turns out DFS who I bought from have loan stock and let me borrow a sofa until my new one was ready. They then swapped them over. Might be worth seeing if you can arrange something similar?0

Thanks again to all for your comments, advice and great ideas.
We will definitely wait.
I had already thought about garden furniture Penguingirl as this is our first home with a garden so I have my eye on a rattan corner sofa which will be ideal to use in the living room until our sofa arrives and then it can go in the shed until next Summer. I love the idea of bean bags too MrsMazza. I think that's a plan.
Agrinnall - can't take old one as leaving it for my tenant
Will look into the other ideas too, thanks0 -
Definitely don't rush, what you think will look good in your new house now may well be different once you've been in a few weeks. Make do for a while.
I'm another who started off with odds and ends & second hand. Well, not started off - almost all my adult life! We've had some really good quality second hand stuff that lasted years. I only had a brand new suite after 23 years lol.SPC 8 (2015) #485 TOTAL: £334.65

Hi, not a reply to last post but unsure where to ask my question. I purchased a 2 seat leather sofa and a 3 seat sofa bed/chaise long combination in store on 16 April 2016. The 3 seat combo was NOT available to view in the store. It was duly delivered o 21 June. The 3 seat combo slots together in certain places. However firstly, four of the feet were missing, and needed to be reordered which would take 2 weeks! Secondly the back part of the sofa bed would not slot together. And so a service appointment was arranged after the delivery guys hauled at the sofa for an hour. Today the service guy appeared 30 June and half an hour of trying and unscrewing the brackets and re positioning them to try and fit the back he realised the bracket itself is too large and needs to place an order. Which will take a further two weeks. My chaise part also doesn't close properly and has a 1 inch gap. As there was no showroom sofa to view I don't know if this is correct but after looking at it myself the bracket appears to be screwed in too close to the edge. He said it was OK!
I now have new screw holes in the furniture all be it you cant see them. My question is, am I within my rights to ask for either a full refund or a new suite, either a replacement of the same suite or a different kind since I have no confidence in the manufacturing of it. I have allowed one attempt at a repair and this has failed. Can I cancel etc?0 -
I asked DFS if I could have my sofas built for a certain date (about a year later). They didn't seem to mind.0

Re my previous post. After 2 emails and a phone call to store manager quoting Consumer Rights Act 2015 and stating the sofa was faulty on delivery and not fir for purpose DFS agreed to give me a new sofa as I requested. I did say refund or new sofa of my choice and I'd prefer same sofa. They will uplift and give me temporary furniture to use on Monday until my new sofa is made. I'm choosing a different combination to ensure I don't just get the old one back with repairs.
My advise to anyone is stick with it and get your facts beforehand anbout your rights and don't be bullied. See my other post about flight compensation for delayed flight. It took over 2 years of arguing and even with a change in the EU law I still had a fight on my hands but won in the end and got about £2000 back( can't quite remember) Martin Lewis you are a genius and a Godsend:money::A0 -
I was supposed to move in to my new build last December and ordered a load of furniture in November, after the builder then telling me all was on schedule. Turns out they got into a legal battle with a subcontractor and I am now completing end of this month.
Luckily, I ordered most of the furniture from the same company and they have kept it in their warehouse for me free of charge and the builder put everything else into secured storage, but I would wait with ordering stuff till you have the keys as you might not get as lucky as I did with people being understanding and patient.0
